Somebody That I Used To Know
Gotye Kimbra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)

(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know, that I used to know, I used to know somebody

Overall Meaning

The song “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra is a poignant reflection on a failed romantic relationship. The singer thinks about their past with their former partner, and despite feeling lonely in their company, they believed that their partner was right for them. The singer was still in love with their former partner and the memory of their love is still an ache they remember.

The chorus of the song highlights a bitter post-breakup feeling. The singer sings about how their ex-partner cut them off and acted like their relationship never happened. The singer confronts the fact that they didn't need their ex-partner’s love but the feeling of being treated as a stranger hurts deeply. However, they acknowledge that they don't need their ex-partner anymore; they're just somebody that they used to know.

The song touches on the idea that people can become addicted to a certain kind of sadness that keeps them attached to someone who doesn't feel the same anymore. This song explores the common post-breakup emotions of sadness, anger, and frustration, but ultimately realizes that they have moved on and no longer need their ex-partner. “Somebody That I Used To Know” highlights the reality of the impact of relationship breakdowns and how it can evoke complicated feelings that someone should deal with.

gotye ignoring what she's saying and just saying "you didn't have to cut me off" is such a beautiful detail. He hears her but he is so caught up in his own pain that he doesn't look her direction until she starts to go away and him knowing her starts to fade away. He looks in her direction, she's still there but he doesn't know her anymore, she's different, she's distant. Somebody that he used to know. She still exists in his space but it's not who he knew.

I used to enjoy this song. Something Terrible happened last year and she cut me off. I never heard from her again, the song started to hurt a lot when i paid attention to the lyrics.

It's the eerie feeling that they as are still alive but you're strangers, a person who you used to share every single thing in your life, and all of a sudden you don't even know them anymore.

I can't describe how much the lyrics resonate. "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness" and the pain even tho he says "but I'll admit they I'm glad it was over".

I'm sorry for anyone going through that ❤ it'll all be good in the end, it'll all work out
