Effigy
Gov't Mule Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night I saw a flyin' bird
In a palace
All the land
Of humble subjects watched it
Mixed emotions
Who is burning who is burning
Effigy
Who is burning who is burning
Effigy

Last night I saw the fire spread into
The palace doors
Silent majority weren't keeping quiet anymore
Who is burning who is burning
Effigy
Who is burning who is burning
Effigy

Last night I saw the fire burn into
The country side
In the morning dew were left to watch
The ashes die
Who is burning who is burning
Effigy
Who is burning who is burning
Effigy
Why, why, why
Effigy

Who is burning tell me who is burning

Overall Meaning

"Effigy" is a song by Gov't Mule, an American rock band formed in 1994. The song tells the story of a flying bird that is seen by a group of humble subjects in a palace. They have mixed emotions, unsure of who or what the bird represents. However, as the fire spreads into the palace doors, the silent majority can no longer stay quiet. The lyrics ask, "Who is burning, who is burning effigy?" The fire eventually reaches the countryside, leaving the remnants of the palace to watch the ashes die in the morning dew. The song ends with the repetition of the question, "Who is burning?"

The lyrics of the song can be interpreted in many ways. On one level, it can be seen as a metaphor for political upheaval, where the people have had enough of the ruling class and are ready to take action. The effigy represents the power structure that the people want to burn down. It can also be interpreted as a warning against blindly following those in power, without questioning their motives or actions.

Interestingly, the title of the song "Effigy" is a reference to the practice of burning an effigy as a representation of an individual or group in protest or retaliation. The song was written by founding member and guitarist Warren Haynes, who often writes lyrics with social commentary.
