Somebody To Love
Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And all the joy within you dies
(Chorus)
Don't you want somebody to love
Don't you need somebody to love
Wouldn't you love somebody to love
You better find somebody to love
When the garden's flowers, baby, are dead
Yes, and your mind, your mind is so full of red
(Chorus)
Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his
Yeah but in your head, baby
I'm afraid you don't know where it is
(Chorus)
Tears are running, they're all running down your breast
And your friends, baby, they treat you like a guest
(Chorus)
The lyrics in Somebody to Love touch on themes of disillusionment and the search for meaning and connection in life. The first verse speaks to the idea that sometimes what we believe to be true turns out to be false, and that realization can be gut-wrenching, robbing us of joy and meaning. The chorus offers a simple prescription for this feeling of loneliness and disappointment - find somebody to love. The singer implores the listener to seek out connection and togetherness as a way to combat the pain of living in a world where reality can be difficult to accept.
The second verse speaks to the idea that even when beauty surrounds us - in this case, a a garden full of flowers - it can be hard to appreciate it when our minds are clouded with negativity or anxiety. The images of red in the lyrics suggest anger or danger, further emphasizing the idea that our emotional state can color our perception of the world around us. The final verse speaks to the idea that even our closest relationships can fail us - our partners can resemble someone we loved and lost but the connection might be missing. Ultimately, the message of the song is that we all need somebody to love, and that the search for love and connection is a necessary part of the human experience.

3 Goddesses of Woodstock: Grace (Spirit), Janis (Body/Emotions), Joni (Mind). Joni, an unparalleled musician and lyricist, penned the song to memorialize THE event of the Psychadelic 60s. Martin, Joni was saying this in 1967-
what we all know, and forgot, what we all yearn for, but cannot:
“Woodstock”
I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, "Where are you going?"
And this he told me
"I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm
I'm gonna join in a rock 'n' roll band
I'm gonna camp out on the land
I'm gonna try an' get my soul free"
We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
"Then can I walk beside you?
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning"
"Well, maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe it's the time of man
I don't know who l am
But you know, life is for learning"
We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devil's bargain
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Yeah, but a better story, in my opinion, was how Santana was told he had six hours before they went on stage so him and the guys in the band did some mescaline figuring they had time to trip then mellow out before showtime. An hour after dropping the mesc and just starting to trip they were told of a schedule change and they were going on NEXT! Can you imagine? Peaking on mescaline and performing in front of a few hundred thousand people all looking at YOU! They friggin' nailed it and I think it's one of the better performances of Woodstock. Somewhere on youtube I saw an interview with Carlos explaining this.
