Grace found herself in Los Angeles surrounded by creatives and collaborating with a series of musicians who helped her develop her singular voice into a chorus: Producer Carlos Nino, best known for his work with the influential Dublab collective, singer-songwriter Mark Eitzel of American Music Club and Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who produced the track “Quicksand”, a performer and arranger with artists such as Beck, Gnarls Barkley, Tori Amos and currently Nine Inch Nails.
Upon completing her studies in Perth, Grace returned to California in the fall of 2008 to record her debut album with producer Ben Harper at El Dorado Studios. With his incendiary band Relentless7 bringing a new depth to her haunting compositions, the collaboration of these artists resulted in a unique sound composed of darkness, honesty, discomfort yet tranquillity. Two of the album’s tracks, “I’ve Handled Myself Wrong” and “H.,” will be self-released through her own Hurricane Mabel Records as a limited edition 7” record and digitally through iTunes in March 2010.
Since recording with Relentless7, Grace has performed a number of intimate and high profile club shows in Los Angeles as well as numerous sold out gigs in her hometown of Perth. In 2008, Grace toured with Ben Harper & Relentless7 and gave her Australian festival debut at the 2009 Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival.
Already garnering critical acclaim abroad, LA Weekly Music Editor Randall Roberts reviewed one of Grace’s shows describing it as a “thrilling performance” and “pretty incredible statement of purpose... Woodroofe’s sturdy and mournful songs fit that atmosphere...powerful, dynamic, striking.”
Producer Ben Harper enthuses, “She’s astonishing – and I don’t use that word but maybe once a decade.”

Grace Woodroofe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm all alone with your ghost
There's no way I'll understand
There's no bliss that I know
Hand on mine, you drove slow
To choose an avocado
You looked into me and I'd melt into you
You looked into me and I'd melt into you
Blue eyes
Buried in your neck
There's no need to take a breath
You pull me close, I let go
Every flight, window seat
Dream about you and me
I wonder if she does the same
You looked into me and I'd melt into you
You looked into me and I'd melt into you
Blue eyes
Blue eyes
You looked into me and I'd melt into you
You looked into me and I'd melt into you
Blue eyes
Blue eyes
The lyrics to Grace Woodroofe's song "Beginning" portray a deep sense of longing and nostalgia. The singer is reminiscing about a past relationship, haunted by the presence of the person they have lost. Even though they are alone, the ghost of their former lover lingers, refusing to let go. The singer expresses their confusion and inability to comprehend the situation, as they seek solace in a bliss that is unknown to them.
The lyrics also touch upon intimate moments shared between the singer and their lover; a memory of driving slowly while holding hands, choosing an avocado together. The physical closeness is emphasized, with the singer describing how their partner's hand is buried in their neck. The act of taking a breath becomes unnecessary in their presence, as if they are completely consumed by the relationship.
Despite the pain and longing, there is a bittersweet quality to the lyrics. The singer dreams about their love, wondering if their ex-partner also does the same. The repetition of the phrase "You looked into me and I'd melt into you" emphasizes the intensity of the connection they once shared. The mention of "blue eyes" further adds to the emotional impact, suggesting that the memory of this person remains deeply ingrained in the singer's mind.
Overall, the lyrics of "Beginning" explore themes of loss, longing, and the indelible mark that a past love can leave on an individual.
