Romance
Great Pianists - Vol. 2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Que t'as si bien attachées
Puis me mentir à moi même
Sans pour autant me briser
Tu as trahi toute ma confiance
(tu as trahi toute ma confiance)
Plus de romance, plus de souffrance
(plus de souffrance)
Tu as trahi toute ma confiance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics from "Romance" by Great Pianists - Vol. 2 delves into the complexities of a tumultuous relationship, filled with conflicting emotions and experiences. The first paragraph describes a sense of detachment and analysis of the relationship, likening it to a medical examination where the singer realizes their partner is leaving. The rapid heartbeat on the electrocardiogram symbolizes the emotional turmoil and confusion brought on by a viral infection-like feeling that disrupts their harmony. The imagery of a sensual wave and a virtual world rife with deception creates a sense of disorientation and unease, amplifying the tension in the relationship.

As the lyrics progress, the theme of unfulfilled love and the inability to connect on a deeper level becomes apparent. The mention of jealousy, past actions, and the inevitable passing of time represented by the flowing sand in an hourglass allude to unresolved conflicts and a gradual disintegration of the bond between the two partners. The notion that love is fragile and fleeting accentuates the pain and disillusionment experienced by the singer, leading to a sense of resignation and bitterness towards the situation.

The third paragraph delves deeper into the singer's internal struggle and conflicting emotions. The metaphorical references to burning in hell and feeling buried alive convey a sense of intense emotional turmoil and confusion. The inability to express love and the internal self-deception add layers of complexity to the relationship, highlighting the inner conflict and turmoil experienced by the singer as they come to terms with the end of the romance.

The concluding paragraphs bring closure to the narrative, with the singer reflecting on the betrayal of trust and the emotional manipulation they endured in the relationship. The repetition of "plus de romance, plus de souffrance" (no more romance, no more pain) underscores the finality of the situation and the resolution to move on from the hurtful past. The lyrics encapsulate the bittersweet journey of love, loss, and ultimately, personal growth and acceptance in the face of heartbreak.

Thank you for uploading all these different versions of this beautiful masterpiece. They are all superb but William Kapell's is my personal favourite. Peter Katin also recorded an excellent version

1- do not overdo it; 2- do not miss the tenderness at the end of the main melody. Rubinstein understood this, but did he translate it well? no. I like the melody by W Kapell but other parts seem a bit erratic and above all the conclusion, which has nothing nocturnal, disappoints me (there is a trace of this beautiful pronunciation of the melody in Imogen Cooper's version, curiously absent here). In the end, the recordings as a whole are very disappointing: only Catherine Collard (as is so often the case) comes close from my view of this piece. Anyway Thank you for uploading.

You missed Carl Friedberg.
