Jaded
Green Day (Live In Chile 2010) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somebody keep my balance
I think I'm falling off
Into a state of regression
The expiration date
Rapidly coming up
It's leaving me behind to rank

Always move forward
Going straight will get you nowhere
There is no progress
Evolution killed it all
I found my place in nowhere

I'm taking one step sideways
Leading with my crutch
Got a fucked up equilibrium
Count down from nine to five
Hooray
We're gonna die
Blessed into our extinction

Always move forward
Going straight will get you nowhere
There is no progress
Evolution killed it all
I found my place in nowhere

Always move forward
Going straight will get you nowhere
There is no progress
Evolution killed it all
I found my place in nowhere

In nowhere, in nowhere

Overall Meaning

In "Jaded," Green Day's lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong is struggling to maintain his balance in a world that is constantly changing and evolving. He feels that his own expiration date is rapidly approaching and that he's being left behind in a state of regression. The lyrics suggest that there is no progress, and that evolution has killed it all. Despite this, Armstrong has found his place in nowhere, implying a sense of hopelessness and stagnation.

The repetition of the lines "always move forward, going straight will get you nowhere," adds to the frustration and hopelessness conveyed in the song. The lyrics could be interpreted as a critique of societal pressure to constantly progress and evolve, and a suggestion that sometimes it's okay to find contentment in just being where you are.

The mention of counting down from nine to five and the line "hooray, we're gonna die" could be interpreted as a commentary on the monotony of the daily grind and the inevitability of death.
