While his image and style differ markedly from most comics associated with the so-called alternative comedy scene, Behrendt came up as a performer alongside comics like David Cross (with whom he roomed for years) and Patton Oswalt. Behrendt was a consultant for two 2001 episodes of the popular television show Sex and the City, and co-wrote the New York Times best sellers He's Just Not That Into You and It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken. He has appeared regularly on The Tonight Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. His stand up special, Greg Behrendt is Uncool, debuted on Comedy Central in January of 2006. In June 2006, he appeared on Celebrity Poker Showdown, playing for a domestic violence charity (he came in second in the tournament).
In his early years, Greg started doing stand-up and improv comedy in San Francisco. He was once a member of "Crash and Burn", an improv comedy ensemble whose members included Margaret Cho.
Greg premiered his own daily daytime talk show called The Greg Behrendt Show on Tuesday, September 12, 2006. Sony Pictures Television announced in January 2007 that the series would not have a second season. He also did a midseason replacement program for the 2006-07 television season called Greg Behrendt's Wake-Up Call for ABC, which never aired.
He currently does a weekly podcast with close friend and fellow stand up comedian Dave Anthony called Walking The Room.
Behrendt is currently living in Los Angeles with his wife, Amiira Ruotola-Behrendt, and their two children.

Master G. B saved my life. I met a wonderful man who I spent 25 years with after reading G.B's book. If not for Greg, I'd still be scambling my brain trying to figure out why he doesn't like me, like the relative law of physics. I lost my wonderful ex 13 years' ago, but he was so into me from hello. I loved him, I was loyal to him, I made him happy and he loved me. I think now approaching 60, I won't find love again, but thank you Greg for writing HjNTIY. You did it because you love women and we bloody love you right back not just in the States, but here in Australia too
