While Greg Kihn may have found a home for his music when he moved to Berkeley in 1974 and signed on with Beserkley Records, it would take almost a decade to find a successful formula for his music. Winding from Dylanesque folk to merseyesque rock, by the early '80s Kihn and his band found they shared elements of new wave music, and scored their first US hit, "The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em)." Kihn had a bigger hit the following year with "Jeopardy," which peaked in the States at number 2. "Jeopardy" brought Kihn two of the highest honors an early eighties act could achieve: MTV put the video into heavy rotation, and Weird Al Yankovic recorded a parody. Kihn has been hard at work over the years, hosting a radio show, writing books and coming up with clever album titles (Kihnspiracy, Unkihntrollable). He has kinhtinued recording through it all, though it has proven difficult for Kihn to recapture the successes of 1982 and '83.

Love And Rock And Roll
Greg Kihn Band Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But no one wants to pay
Hey-yeah
And even though you take it when you need it
There's too much in the way
Hey-yeah
The lights go out
And the people get ready
Solid and steady
(Huh)
Love and Rock and Roll
To the bottom of your soul
Two things, two things that don't get old
Love and Rock and Roll
Love and Rock and Roll
Now I don't want desire
And before it goes away
Hey-yeah
Now I'm trying to satisfy my hunger
You know what I say
Hey-yeah
Let the lights go out
Let the people get ready (huh)
Let the music play and play
Solid and steady
(Huh)
Love and Rock and Roll
To the bottom of your soul (rock)
Two things, two things that don't get old
Love and Rock and Roll
Love and Rock and Roll
Two arms to hold me
Two arms to rock me away
Ah hey hey hey
Ah hey hey hey
Love and Rock and Roll
To the bottom of your soul (rock)
Two things, two things that don't get old boy
Love and Rock and Roll boy
Love and Rock and Roll
To the bottom of your soul
Two things, two things that don't get old
To Love and Rock and Roll boy
To Love and Rock and Roll boy
To Love and Rock and Roll boy
The lyrics of Greg Kihn Band's "Love And Rock And Roll" convey the universal desire for love and music, both of which appear to provide a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that few other things do. The opening lines suggest that everyone wants love and music, yet no one wants to pay the price that comes with it. This might be referring to the effort and time that goes into cultivating a relationship and becoming skilled at playing an instrument. However, despite the obstacles, the chorus implies that the pursuit of love and music is worth it to the point where it resonates at the bottom of your soul. The song seems to urge the listener to let go and fully embrace the experience of love and music as they build on each other's joys.
The rest of the lyrics seem to be a playful nod to the equation of "Love + Rock and Roll = Bliss." As the music intensifies and the lights go out, the song conveys a sense of excitement, urging one to let go and allow music to override everything else. The repetition of the phrase "two things that don't get old" emphasizes that love and rock and roll are two things that stand the test of time and offer an unchanging source of joy. Finally, the chorus culminates to a celebration of the connection that love and music offer best, as two arms hold and rock the singer away.
