I Believe in Father Christmas
Greg Lake (Emerson Lake & Palmer) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the virgin birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter's light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire

They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a silent night
And they told me a fairy story
'Till I believed in the Israelite
And I believed in father Christmas
And I looked to the sky with excited eyes
'Till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn
And I saw him and through his disguise

I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave new year
All anguish, pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth

Hallelujah, Noel be it heaven or hell
The Christmas we get we deserve

Overall Meaning

The song "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake of Emerson Lake & Palmer captures the essence of Christmas through the eyes of an adult who has seen the harsh realities of life. The song starts with a reference to the traditional expectations of Christmas such as snow and peace on earth, but it is not fulfilled. Instead, it continues raining, creating a veil of tears for the virgin birth. This line refers to the fact that Christ's birth was accompanied by tears and pain, as He was born into a world that was filled with sin and suffering.

Lake reminisces about a Christmas morning from his childhood, where he remembers the winter light and a distant choir. He recalls the joy of ringing bells and the smell of Christmas trees, which filled the air. He emphasizes how the people around him were full of excitement, tinsel, and fire in their eyes. However, the reality that follows is a harsh one, as he states that he was sold a dream of Christmas, a silent night, and a fairy story. The lies he was told by the people around him led him to believe in the Israelite and Father Christmas, but he then realized that it was just a disguise when he woke up on Christmas morning.

In the end, Lake expresses his wish for a hopeful Christmas and a brave new year. He believes that if we leave our anguish, pain, and sadness behind, our roads will be clearer for us to travel, leading us towards peace. He finishes the song with the statement that "The Christmas we get, we deserve," suggesting that the essence of Christmas is not just about Christmas, but about the way we live our lives throughout the year.

You buy the beauty of the song and allow the bombs to destroy at the same time.

They sold you a Dream of Christmas ( of life in fact )

This song like John Cougars " Pink Houses "

We get the dreams they sell us as millions die at our ignorant hands

Fools Gold - false hopes
Daydreams and make believes

While you sit in the sun

It's my miracle song. I suffered a miscarriage on Christmas Eve. At the hospital they confirmed this and scheduled a d&c for later that morning. I was set up to start the procedure when the doctor examining me said "you're still pregnant!" Say what? I guess it was twins and only one died. The other was born on7/4/86!
