Off The Floor
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my mind
There are dreams of me
Following white

See the form before my eyes
Wouldn't Jesus be surprised
If all colony, the ways to see
And if color be the way you see
Its distant greetings

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Guided by Voices' song Off the Floor can be interpreted in different ways depending on the listener's perspective. One possible interpretation is that the song is about the power of imagination and the ability to create a better reality in one's mind. The first line "In my mind, there are dreams of me" suggests that the singer is imagining a version of themselves in a different context or situation. The next line "following white" could refer to following a pure, idealized version of themselves or a path of righteousness.

The following lines are more cryptic, with the singer seeing a form before their eyes and wondering if Jesus would be surprised by the "colony." This could be a reference to the concepts of colonialism and imperialism, with the singer questioning the dominant ways of seeing the world. The final line "if color be the way you see, its distant greetings" could be interpreted as a commentary on racial divisions and the need to transcend them, with the singer acknowledging that it's not an easy task.

Overall, the lyrics of Off the Floor seem to revolve around the themes of imagination, idealism, and the need to challenge conventional ways of thinking.

That is a trip - love the Pollard overdub interference. That takes it out of R&R into the Realm of the Weird. The Hot Freaks intro is...quite odd. It's hard to keep up but I've got to pay more attention to the last four or five GBV albums and see if they get the playful weirdness going. There might have been some things they did that only came with low-fi, 4-track turf that don't even occur to them anymore.
