In a 2008 forum Q&A, Axl Rose confirmed 'Checkmate' to be a fake title, while joking that the real title was 'Jackie Chan'.
On July 26 2019, a new 28-second snippet leaked, with the tracklisting of a demonstration disc from 2000 revealing the real title as 'Hardschool', and the full track leaked on August 24.

The single version, with Slash and Duff McKagan, was released as their 2nd new song in 13 years on September 24 2021. The bridge samples vocals from 'Eye On You', an unreleased song from 2000.
