Hard Skool
Guns N' Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All cautions made
Every chance was given
No effort spared to save what we had
All in good faith
I would not hesitate
To extend myself and lend you my hand

But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away
Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true, it wouldn't matter anyway

As tempers fade
And lies forgiven
No cause embraced could break what we had
In its place
A storm is lifting
I would've thought you could be more of a man

But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away
Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true, it wouldn't matter anyway

Ayy-ay, ayy-ay
Ayy-ay, ayy-ay

Ayy-ay
Ooh

But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away
Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true, it wouldn't matter anyway

You had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away
Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true, it wouldn't matter anyway

You had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away

Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true, it wouldn't matter anyway

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Hard Skool" by Guns N' Roses reflect a sense of regret and disappointment in someone who continuously made poor choices and ultimately wasted their opportunities. The singer expresses that they had given all the necessary cautions, chances, and effort to salvage their relationship, but the other person refused to change their ways. Despite the singer's willingness to extend a helping hand, the person in question insisted on playing it cool, a foolish decision that led them to throw everything away.

The phrase "hard school" can be interpreted as a metaphor for life's tough lessons and experiences. The person believed they were invincible, thinking they had secured their place and could do as they pleased. However, the singer suggests that even if that were true, it wouldn't make a difference in the end.

As the song progresses, the singer reflects on the fading tempers and forgiven lies that took place, highlighting the resilience of the relationship. Yet, instead of embracing the bond they had, the person chose to create a storm, causing further turmoil. The singer expected more maturity and responsibility from this individual, implicitly suggesting that they should have behaved more like a man.

By repeating the lines "But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way / Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away," Guns N' Roses emphasizes the sense of frustration and disappointment in the failed relationship. The repetition serves to drive home the point that the person's arrogance and stubbornness ultimately led to their downfall.

Overall, "Hard Skool" conveys a sense of lament for someone who had every chance to make things right but chose to ignore the warnings, resulting in the loss of something valuable.

Espero no me puteen.
No soy tan gil.
A mi no me cierra.
Aguante GNR. Pero las cosas como son

I'm actually blown away at how great this is. This is what made them the top band in the mid-late 80's. Awesome

@Wikikiman

This song is pretty lame when you listen back to Appetite, Lies and Illusions. As a matter of fact, this song wouldn't make any of those albums. Even the less popular songs on those albums were better than this song except for "My World".... That song was probably as bad as this one!!

@@Wikikiman why are you spamming this comment everywhere u sad, little troll

@davelanger

This was written by the 1999 version of GNR and that version is way better. Slash and Duff had zero to do with the writing of this song. They are just covering it from the CD era of the band.

@@marcocavalleri3673 this is what I imagine mid 90’s GNR would sound like if they didn’t break up
