I Can't Dance
Gus Arnheim & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our romance won't end on a sorrowful note,
Though by tomorrow you're gone;
The song is ended, but as the songwriter wrote,
The melody lingers on.
They may take you from me, I'll miss your fond caress.
But though they take you from me, I'll still possess.

The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, no, they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No, no, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away

Can't take that away
Can't take that away from me

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of the song speaks of a romantic relationship that has come to an end. The singer conveys that even though the person they love is leaving the next day, their love story won't end with a sorrowful note. They make a reference to a song that has ended, but the melody still lingers on, implying that their memories and the love they shared will remain, despite their physical separation. Though he might miss the person’s fond caress, he still possesses the memories, the things that endear the person to him.

The second stanza goes into detail about the specific things that the person loves about their loved one. It focuses on the things that make this person unique, from the way they wear their hat to their smile, to how they drink tea. The singer expresses his adoration and reminisces on the way they danced, the way they sing off-key and how they hold their knife- the small things that make up who they are. This is emphasized by the repeating chorus, "No, no they can't take that away from me," which overall suggests the power of memory in holding onto the essence of love and the things that makes it special, even when the physical person is no longer present.

Overall, this song speaks to the eternal nature of love and the power of memories to keep us connected to the people we love, even when they are not physically with us, and how these memories keep love alive.

This is a truly delightful, uptempo version of this nostalgic song, by the Arnheim Orchestra in its best years. I loved this, and it is a typical example of a cheerful melody combined with sad lyrics. The orchestral solo work was fabulous. Thank you so much for sharing!

This is a nice slowed tempo compared to the same version in the Gus Arnheim vitaphone short that I've watched many times over, always a joy to watch.

@Alco I second your admiration for those old vitaphone movies. We can only regret that so few of them were made.

Alco

Exactly, I like the whole band Vitaphone shorts so much because it's amazing to see the bands behind the records in action. Or any live film of a band.

You mean the one with Russ Columbo singing in a trio? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iamSYSpVmwE Yes, it's really a sweet and sophisticated clip and the tempo is a little faster, indeed. And what a fun to see whole Arnheim's band play in a live recording!

Marvellous!

I love this tune too. One more good old Walter Donaldson!
