Gus Arnheim's orchestra is yet another favorite of mine from the period; his band had a great sound. Most people, I suppose, associate this song with the Gene Kelly film of the same title. It's a great one, for sure, but so, too, in its way, is THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929, the movie in which Cliff Edwards sang "Singin'" and all the MGM stars played themselves. I love all your shots of the ladies of the day sprinting through the rain-soaked streets -- that's my idea of fun!

My father remembered this being played by Gus Arnheim's Ambassador Hotel Orchestra when he went dancing at the Cocoanut Grove as a teenager in 1930. He always said the Gene Kelly version was a revival of a forgotten tune, which had been by-passed by the swing era.

The best rain images I've seen, esp. the two paintings and that poignant last scene. Yes, there's something magical about rain, particularly when it dances on the roof while you're half-awake under a lovely quilt.

@bill3murr I agree, it's probably the most rousing version of that tune. And it's played very much in style of hot dance bands of the 1920s - without any swing or big-band influence. Thank you for your good wishes. The frost is still tough, ca -20 centigrades. But I belong to a generation which remembers even much toughier frosts in February so at this time of a year my organism feels very well in a climate like that.

@goodfellasunderworld It's true, many younger people are surprised, this song is 80 years old! But it happened to many songs - which were revived later by famous singers like for example, Elvis Presley and became even greater hits than the originals. Presley's great hit "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" is also one of grand-grandma's hits (first recordings were made ca 1900, I think) which were brought back to life in the 1950/60s.

@240252 hmm wie Pan, że też się nad tym zastanawiałem ;-) My Polacy zawsze lubiliśmy tworzyć własne tytuły - tutaj przykład. W 1946 roku "Deszczowa piosenka" nagrana przez Ciżyńskiego w Poznaniu -to też nie piosenka którą tutaj Pan prezentuje tylko jest to zmiana tytułu "Arii Nadira" ;-)

There must have been a very tolerant law in California in the 1930s if teenagers, like your grandfather were allowed to attend the dance parties in night bars or hotel restaurants! In Poland, any teenage student who'd have been caught entertaining himself in a place like that, would have had a big problem in his (her) school! :-))

@Trombonology Actually, the ladies jumping over the puddles are the flappers of Berlin , not of LA, yet the photoes' date is accutarely 1929. So, perhaps they were in a hurry back home, to take off their soaking shoes, pull out from the bag Gus Arnheim's "Singing in The Rain" they just bought in a record store, and sit in an armchair with a glass of Kupferberg Gold, listening to that wunderbares musik from their Electrola koffer-grammophon.
