Singing in the Rain
Gus Arnheim & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face
I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
And singin' just singin' in the rain

Why am I smilin' and why do I sing?
Why does December seem sunny as Spring?
Why do I get up each morning to start happy
And get up with joy in my heart?
Why is each new task a trifle to do?
Because I am living a life full of you

I'm singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face

I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
And singin' just singin' in the rain

Overall Meaning

Gus Arnheim’s classic song “Singin’ in the Rain” is a joyful and optimistic piece celebrating the power of love and hope even in the midst of a seemingly gloomy and stormy day. The lyrics capture the singer's delight and elation, even as rain pours down on him. He is happy to be alive, despite the obstacles that come his way. The lyrical brilliance of this song is how it masterfully combines joy, nostalgia, and romance, all while painting a vivid picture of a man who refuses to give up in the face of adversity.

The opening verses of the song express the singer's exultation at the prospect of walking, singing, and dancing in the rain. The rain in the song is a metaphor for the challenges, difficulties, and the obstacles that life presents. However, the singer is not deterred, for he has found love which has made him resilient. He is no longer weighed down by the dark clouds, nor is he afraid of the stormy days. Instead, he embraces them with open arms, for he knows that come what may, he has love, and that is all that matters.

In the second verse of the song, the lyrics reveal that it is the presence of that special someone that brings meaning and joy to the singer's life. He is rejoicing in the love shared between them, and it is this love that sustains him. The lyrics emphasize that love is transformative and empowering. The singer's life is not perfect, but because he has found love, it has become fuller, brighter, and more meaningful. The song reminds us that love can lift us up, no matter how challenging the circumstances might be.

Gus Arnheim's orchestra is yet another favorite of mine from the period; his band had a great sound. Most people, I suppose, associate this song with the Gene Kelly film of the same title. It's a great one, for sure, but so, too, in its way, is THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929, the movie in which Cliff Edwards sang "Singin'" and all the MGM stars played themselves. I love all your shots of the ladies of the day sprinting through the rain-soaked streets -- that's my idea of fun!

@VictrolaJazz

Wonderful version! I love the final scene in the 1929 movie where the whole cast is singing this song with the ark in the background!

@Bobchai

My father remembered this being played by Gus Arnheim's Ambassador Hotel Orchestra when he went dancing at the Cocoanut Grove as a teenager in 1930. He always said the Gene Kelly version was a revival of a forgotten tune, which had been by-passed by the swing era.

@barbcard

The best rain images I've seen, esp. the two paintings and that poignant last scene. Yes, there's something magical about rain, particularly when it dances on the roof while you're half-awake under a lovely quilt.

one of my favorite tunes no matter who performs it!
