Guy Buddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Early in the morning I can't get right
I had a little date with my baby last night

I said, early in the morning (early in the morning)
I know it's early in the morning (early in the morning)
Early in the morning (yeah)
And I ain't got nothin' but the blues (blues)
I went to the places where we used to go
I went to her house and she don't live there no more

I said, early in the morning (early in the morning)
I know it's early in the morning (early in the morning)
Early in the morning (yeah)
And I ain't got nothin' but the blues (blues)

I went to a girlfriend's house and she was out
I knocked on her father's door and he began to shout

I said early in the morning (early in the morning)
I know it's early in the morning (early in the morning)
Early in the morning (yeah)
And I ain't got nothin' but the blues (blues)

(yeah)
(early in the morning)
(early in the morning)
(early in the morning)
(yeah)
(blues)

I went to Bob Evans to get me something to eat (yeah)
The waitress looked at me said, "Buddy, you sure look beat" (yeah)

I said early in the morning (early in the morning)
I know it's early in the morning (early in the morning)
Early in the morning (yeah)
And I ain't got nothin' but the blues (blues)

I had a lot of money when I started out (yeah)
I can't find my baby, you know my money run out (yeah)

I said early in the morning (early in the morning)
I know it's early in the morning (early in the morning)
Early in the morning (yeah)
And I ain't got nothin' but the blues (blues)

Early in the morning (yeah)
And I ain't got nothin' but the blues (blues)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Guy Buddy's song "Early in the Morning" talks about the struggles that the singer is going through as he tries to come to terms with the loss of his lover. He sings about how he can't seem to get himself together as he wakes up in the morning still feeling down and helpless. The lyrics also indicate that he is trying to find his lover, but it seems futile as he visits places that they used to go to, only to find that she is no longer there. He even visits a girlfriend's house hoping to find her, but she is also not available.

As the song progresses, we realize that the singer seems to have no money left, which makes his situation worse. This can be interpreted as an indication that he spent his money on his lover, and now that she's no longer with him, he's left with nothing. The chorus "And I ain't got nothin' but the blues" is a poignant expression of the singer's struggles and his feeling of loss.
