@catholiccontriversy You misunderstand completely what secondary profits and syndication are for the networks. You are way too domestic in your thinking for one.

Secondary profits isn't you watching it again, it is selling it to other networks so they can show it, and to a much lesser extent rerunning it later to fill space. They also really do start selling it the moment they can, but they will have restrictions for air time and frequency based on whether they are also rerunning it themselves and yes they will usually restrict others reairing during the same "season." They often had much less of these restrictions for international sales and syndication.

The biggest profit driver in syndication for US networks wasn't other US networks either, it was syndication on their own networks and internationally. Which I mention, that even when shows or movies weren't syndicated on other networks domestically they were syndicated far and wide internationally.

They didn't try to sell the same content to the same viewers over and over, they sold it to places where new viewers could see it.

Streaming services don't take advantage of secondary revenue channels like this, because Streaming services (mostly) all try to be worldwide services, so they think they can be primary content sources in all regions and think their original content should bring in subscribers, but there are severely diminishing returns on how many subscribers can reasonably be gained this way.

EDIT: Streaming services can still exploit secondary revenue channels and syndication, they just have to stop trying to create their own little walled gardens around their original content. Let the original content be its own revenue generator and let the Streaming service be its own revenue generator. If they can synergize that is awesome, but most of the time they are going to be driving revenue via different methods and offerings, the original content is a booster and way to offer something extra, not the whole key to revenue.

I have Paramount+ right now, for Survivor (I stopped watching on television after about season 20 so I have quite a few seasons to make up), also old Perry Mason, Star Trek Lower Decks, The Yellowstone prequels, Bull, The Good Fight etc. Point is, I signed up near the first of the year for a $50,one year no ad deal. I’m on board for the entire year and don’t need to go anywhere else. Plenty to watch here, as I indicated above.

Because "how can we get new subscribers" that is the correct way to run streaming services. People WILL leave a streaming service when they ran out of stuff they are interested in and wanted to check out other streaming services' offers. It's inevitable.

There is very little brand loyalty when it comes to streaming services. Most people cycle out their subscriptions. New shows on HBO they wanna watch? They sub for a month or two and cancel after the shows end. Then they go onto Netflix, and watch whatever they were interested in next. Then maybe HBO has something cool again, then they go back to subbing for HBO for a month or two and then cancel again. No one pays for 5 or 6 different streaming services at once, all year long. People keep 1 or 2 subscriptions and cycle them out.

This is why streaming services constantly need to put out new content to get new subscribers and get back old subscribers.

Because this is accessible. They aren´t restricted just to US, so if they reach really high number of subscibers they can afford it. But with this quality of contet they don´t get those numbers. They should invest firstly to antiwoke vaccination.
Look at it like this: they had like 168,000,000 subscribers. Fee is different from country to country, but for 8€ it is 1,344,000,000 monthly. With this you can make some good products and have even more subscribers. Not every TV show needs to be star wars. We had much cheaper shows in past with higheer quality. Yes, have some big hit, like House of Dragon, Marvel (not woke garbage), Westworld, but make also some commedy (not garbage for infants), some mystery, some drama, some action - simply different genres to attract more people. Everyone remember Marco Polo, or House of Cards, or Stranger Things. No one is interested in woke Witcher, or shows that are cancelled after 1 season.

@NATIK ? while you got the big broadcast networks mostly right (they typically wait a full season before going to syndication, only past seasons of the big bang theory could be watched on TBS not the current season airing on CBS), that wasn't so much the case with the cable networks in my experience; sure, after airing on Nickelodeon Spongebob would rerun on nicktoons, but it wouldn't be seen on rival cartoon network. The "profitable through syndication" thing still applies, since the shows would rerun quite regularly to fill air time and that would generate ad revenue from pre-existing content with people rewatching episodes, and personally I don't rewatch episodes after I saw it once with streaming, which cuts off any "revenue" a second viewing would make.

This resembles the theater business model of the 1920s and 1930s where every studio had their own theaters. Then they realized it was cheaper to make the movies and have another company handle distribution. Customers also have choices when going to the theater.

People told them this would happen and they didn’t listen. Paying for 5+ streaming services just to watch the things you want will always push people aways due to cost restrictions. Now, as mentioned, many people will pay for one at a time, binge the shows they want to watch and then cancel till something else comes along. That, or they resort to piracy which is much easier now as all shows are available through the internet making pirating a much easier thing to do. They dug their own grave.

The reason I left cable services for streaming was the ungodly amount of commercials constantly interrupting the flow of the program I was watching. IF streaming services such as Netflix and Disney + go this route, well, they'll be driving away even more customers imo. I pay to not have commercials constantly thrown in my face, if that changes...well there are other "options" that won't benefit these companies.

I believe there is two things that compound the problem. First, if you looked at old Netflix it was pretty much everything in one place. Now it’s fragmented into multiple streaming services. The market is too diluted. Secondly, the writing for modern tv compared to older shows is a night and day difference. Modern Trek is a shell of old Trek, there are no sitcoms that can rival the success of older shows like Friends, Seinfeld, older Simpsons etc.

I may be old school but I’ve gone back to just buying physical media of shows and movies I like and know I will rewatch. It’s mine, I can watch it when I want, don’t need to worry about it leaving a service and no ads.

Thing is, those days are long gone, have been for decades.

I doubt some of these shows would be as successful if they were made today. Back then, they had a captive audience - not as many TV stations back then, and no streaming services.

We also have to consider we are a "politically correct" society. If there is anything slightly non PC, not enough minorities, slightly controversial, then it doesn't get made.

It wasn't long ago I got looked at weird because, "You STILL have a BluRay player?!?" Yep, and I still use it. I have quite a collection of Must See TV shows (including the All Time best lineup of Cosby Show, Family Ties, Night Court, and Cheers). I don't have to worry about them no longer streaming on any platform...it's great!! And the best part is, because physical media no longer seems to be in vogue, individual titles are still quite cheap, usually.

This is literally why I recently started buying Blu-Ray and DVDs again, just got sick of movies and shows I wanted to watch not being on any of streaming services I had or being on there previously and getting removed its no longer that convenient with every company under the sun opening their own platform the market is completely over saturated. I predict a huge streaming industry crash within the next couple years there's no way this is sustainable for much longer.

@michael Sanseverino Rented for $3-$4 which is about $6 in today's money and your time to get ready, go to the store, and comeback. You can just get 'rent' the streaming site you want for a month for about the same with ads or double the price without ad -- but you get access to many other movies. In addition, most movies can also be rented online so that's even FAR easier than the old says of physically having to go to a store.

Worse, the pirates often have a better UI that is streamlined and easy to navigate, while these megacorps have bloated, flashy UI's that are obtuse. Throw in political and ideological maneuvering by megacorps, and its easy to tell yourself that pirating is not only has more QOL, but is also more ethical than watching legally.

One of the main things these execs are missing is during the pandemic, streaming is all people could do. So, of course it was going to grow during the time and shrink after the pandemic was over. But like he said, there were multiple factors involved. As far as Disney + goes, early on, it was the only way to see new Marvel content and that content and the new Star Wars content was pretty good. It was appointment TV. But as the quality dropped, so did the need to see it right when it dropped. She Hulk was a disaster for them and Bobafet was not horrible, but not what we expected.

Growing up, I was a big fan of X-Men the animated series. It was so well crafted. The story of mutants was universally relatable. Media abstractly taught me life lessons, touched on difficult situations, found intelligent ways to tell stories. So much so that when I've rewatched "Kid's movies" from the 90's I realized how well they told & crafted stories even adults and kid's can enjoy & appreciate it. (Pretty much anything created by Don Bluth or Written by Roald Dahl) My Brave little toaster, James and the giant peach, The never ending story, Jumanji, Hook, The secret of the Nimh, Sword and the stone, black cauldron, beetle juice, Alice in wonderland, Rock-a-doodle, Captain Planet, Thundercats, He-man, Spawn, Matilda, The BFG, Ren and stimpy, courage the cowardly dog, magic school bus, Dexter's laboratory, pinky and the brain, rocko's modern life, Ah! Real monster's, goosebumps, are you afraid of the dark, pee wee's playhouse, she-ra warrior princess, Flintstones, the Jetsons. So many more I won't list them all but they had such creative range. So many ways of telling stories. So many types of creatures, unique worlds, weird things, macabre things. I loved how we used to embrace those things. Nowadays everything is so bland or Shallow live action version's filed with nonsense & hollowness. I miss the Era of creativity, of animated series, of things that made us utilize our intelligence. Artistic depictions of the Human condition that connects us on a deeper level. No matter what kind of character, creature, specie's they are. I seriously don't understand who can enjoy these modern live action movies. Filled with so much disconnected CGI. Cheap cop out writing, acting, storytelling that is treating our entire audience like they are 2 yr olds that just need a pair of shiney keys waved in front of them for entertainment... it's a very bland & soulless way to entertain... Seeing how things are nowadays, i feel so lucky that i got to grow up in the 90's. Back then I never could have guessed that things would have changed the ways they did. It was such a great time to be a kid. The world seemed to have so many creative ways kids, teens and adults could all enjoy themselves. Entertaining movies with practical effects. Animated movies/shows galore. If they used CGI it was used intelligently. I really miss the Vibe of that Era. The creativity that came from that era. I really hope we find a way to reconnect with it because the world seems like it really needs it right now. I mean just look at the aesthetics compared to now? Things have somehow become so bland, bleek, and minimalism that it doesn't even make since. Most Old house's/building's/uúnique shop's are gone. Interesting oddities like drive in movies, indoor fun zones, arcade's, magazines that came with a demo disc to try out game's, blockbuster/Hollywood video, McDonald's had N64's, you could preview music before buying it, they had great kid's toy's, Roller Rink's, Garbage pale kid's card's. You get the point. I want to reignite that feel sort of like Retro-Futurism or that Y2K Vibe compared to this current Dystopian pessimism that seems solely focused purely on capitalistic agendas. Our Quality of Life should be better than this.

One of the biggest issues with streaming services is that they make so much original "content" that the quality gets diluted and people give up, especially when shows that are actually good get cancelled and animation gets short shrift. That's without getting into specific IP issues e.g. messing with canon.

I think a fundamental issue with streaming services and modern media, in general, is oversaturation, it's the least risky road to take but the income won't last forever. So it's kind of fitting that streaming is failing because there are too many streaming services.

The old Netflix model was successful because it was the ONLY streaming service and it didn't make its own content, so for the fee of licensing agreement everyone had to come to it to watch their shows whenever. Once the library dwindled due to more services popping up and these services racked up debt by making their own series, streaming was no longer as lucrative as it used to be.

The main problem is that besides the lack of catalog content , they are not updating how they develop film and release new content, instead they continue to try and push back to the old pre streaming format , and that just wont work bc we are very different in how we watch content now. If they simply started filming new shows in a more consistent way releasing episodes continuously over a longer time span much the same way as daytime soaps are filmed they would quickly reinforce and engage viewers across the board. Instead they are set on back tracking and people are just not going back with them .

@Jennifer Nichole that's more of a problem with companies signing short sighted exclusivity deals, or losing the rights to certain properties within the medium and not wanting to pay for the renewed use.
I don't know if that last one applies to movies, but there's lots of video games that'll never get a faithful remake/rerelease on new platforms as certain trademarked assets in the game would need to be relicensed to be legally used.

Having access to so many streaming services at all times is what is killing the business. Being able to binge entire seasons, watching whatever you want when you want, is making it not a big deal. It's like having xmas everyday, I love xmas, but if it happened everyday, it would lose its magic and be more of a chore than anything else.

I think the fact that so many shows lately are being canceled that seen to have done well, or are liked. Ontop of the whole Warner "salt the earth" policy they did over on HBO. So people are realizing that even the shows that they do like, can easily be taken away, and in some cases, deleted from existence, if it makes sense for them to do it financially.

Honestly, some days the "freevee" is appealing just because I don't want to have to decide what to watch. It's nice to just pick something that's "on" and take the mental load of choosing a show or movie, or hell even what platform, out of the equation.

At least for me, when Disney+ was being advertised, I was under the assumption the new content would be pretty constant . Of course the pandemic played a role in slowing content, but we're in 2023 and I feel like things just trickle out at a snails pace.

The main thing I like about streaming is that I almost get to watch what I want to to watch when my time allows it; rather than having to watch something I want to watch when the networks tell me when I can watch it. And I say almost because not every steaming service has the movie or tv show I want to watch, even the free ones. There has been several shows I've put on my list wanting to watch at a later time only to have the streaming service they're on tell me "Hey five more days and this show will no longer be available." Yeah, try watching five or more seasons of a show within a limited time frame. Like, we as "consumers" have nothing better to do with or lives. "What work? I can't go to go to work I only got three more days to finish all seven seasons or I'll never get to watch this show again." "Sorry kids but this show is more important than me putting food on the table for you." "Sleep really? Can't do that must watch this show." So if these streaming networks continue to keep boasting about having every show or movie that I want to watch I might have to start calling them out on that.

I'd be curious about how the fast services blend in with the new ATSC 3 broadcast standard. I could see some of these big streaming services opting to broadcast free over-the-air in a format similar to Pluto. Disney is already affiliated with lots of local TV stations via ABC and could be in a position to offer such a service as a sub-channel.

The hurdle would be getting people to go out to buy a TV antenna and an ATSC 3 turner box.

I don't inherently have an issue with streamers collapsing/adapting to new models, but I do worry at the amount of media that could potentially be lost if any big streaming services go under. I'm sure most of their popular IP would get sold off, but there'd probably be a huge surplus of a lot of content no one wants to buy that may get lost or become hard to access.

I was thinking the same. Instead of just having a streaming service, they should sell either DVD/BluRays. Or they could do a iTunes style model. Where you can download movies into your devices. Like how some people downloaded songs in their iPods. It could be like a digital DVD. You have the movie, and also a menu to select language, special features, scenes, etc. not I’m sure how they’d do it. But it could work. I would love to be able to watch the stuff I buy from iMovie and watch it even when my internet is down.

Totally this. I laughed at all the constant insistence that superhero fatigue was right around the corner 5 or 6 years ago, but now it's got me. I've genuinely enjoyed every marvel show I watched, there was no big "christ this is awful" moment for me, they were all well made and kept me watching. But bit by bit, it all got too much and I've pretty much walked away and checked out. It's the shows that did it, we put up with runs of mediocre films before (though this has been the worst), but the shows just made the whole thing feel cheaper and made me lose the sense that we were all on the same page following the same story - it's started to feel like comic books, or the old Star Wars EU, where the canonical state of the world just gets away from everyone.

For me, Far From Home was the perfect epilogue (unpopular opinion but I hated No Way Home, sorry not sorry), and everything after that feels like it's cheapening the legacy of phases 1-3.

TBH, I was never really interested in cinematic universes. Sure, they do keep the fanboys happy and those that were reading the comics to try and figure out which plot lines would show up, but it introduces a bunch of constraints to the movies that aren't necessarily a good thing.

The best way to keep subscribers is constantly having content for people to watch. If there was always a Star Wars show premiering every week with maybe a two to four week break in between I’d never want to cancel. Or if they had shows that people want to watch and binge. I usually watch sitcoms when I eat dinner or right before I go to bed. So if they added a bunch of abc sitcoms or shows. That people might have seen but want to watch again. I’m sure they would keep subscribers. Disney has some of the best content out there.

@Tim Loader What do you mean it was never sustainable? It's inherently easy (if not trivial) to store and transmit digital files. The cost of distributing a show digitally, versus in theatres, is massive. There's less payout, sure, but there's also less upfront cost (compared to theatre showings), less risk, and you can keep hosting any given show indefinitely.

What makes things unsustainable are middleman fees, IP issues, legal battles, retracting content, zone locked content, etc. The fact that the Jolly Roger option exists, on seemingly nothing but a tiny trickle of ad revenue and a few optional fees, is proof that streaming services could get SOME money instead of NOTHING if they gave people a pallateable option. These execs are treating life like a zero sum game, winner take all, when reality is far more nuanced.

That's one thing I do praise Netflix for, even if these days they're making terrible decisions. There's no one brand on Netflix, yeah they have stuff like Stranger Things but those don't carry nearly as much weight as Marvel or SW, instead they greenlight multiple different shows. I mean, not too long ago The Queen's Gambit took the world by storm out of nowhere, then Squid Game.

The big problem with the streaming services is that there are just too many of them. The whole industry should move to a sensibly priced pay per view model where people only pay for what they want, and then the producers would know exactly what people are prepared to pay for.

One of the biggest problems with Disney+ is their content outside the U.S., in some regions like Latin America their 20th Century Fox catalog, which includes things like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers and anime series like Bleach and Summer Time Rendering are only available in the separate streaming platform Star+, and most people cannot afford hiring 2 separate services, even if they offer them as a combo sometimes

Star+ is essentially an international equivalent to the American service, Hulu. It has primarily adult & third party content from Universal, WB, and others. Star+ is more Fox oriented, but ultimately, they tried to force a status quo from the US to other countries. Too much subscription.

I have been wondering if streaming services will start pushing back towards a weekly release schedule for more content. It seems like it would be a lot more sustainable than trying to release enough shows to keep viewers every month. Although I'm sure the move would also upset many viewers.

The thing that keeps people from subscribing (other than money) is that it's too complicated. In the past, you went to the cinema and could rent the casettes or DVDs and a few years later watch it on free tv. But now it's hard to keep track of the content. There are far too many streaming services and all the content is spread out on each and people are way too lazy to follow it. Netflix has far too many things coming out and most of them fall under the radar and get cancelled. Disney has less content coming out but it's not worth to stay subscribed.

It used to be that we had HBO and Showtime, and they would get all the movies that recently left the theaters. I would be more interested in those but all streaming services seem to be selling their own shows. That's why I like Peacock because it has a lot of the old NBC shows I like. But I do generally only subscribe to maybe 2 at a time

@Axterix13 you're referring to that AMC startup with Nicole Kidman 😆 yeah it made sense in 2020 but now I don't get why they STILL do it. Been going to Cinemarks or Regals to avoid her face sometimes lmao. But even before 2020 there was all those trailers and overpriced concession food and whatnot.
For me, I just watched John Wick 4 in theatres and it was such a better experience than watching 1-3, where I didn't see them when they came out and just had to catch em digitally. Call me nostalgic, but I guess I like the quiet, the actually audible dialogue, the projection quality, the leather seats. Overall it makes a great experience, particularly if you go with someone. Maybe it's a dying business, maybe it's not, it's whatever the people want.

@Da_Pikmin_Coder I don't know about that. I went to see the new D&D movie in theaters, and, well, it pretty much made me not want to go to theaters anymore. You hit the start time, and then you get a bajillion trailers. Get past that, and now they have a boring thing about how magical the movie theater experience is... which is ironic, because that stupid short is making it very unmagical. And then they have another short, this time with the actors from the movie, telling me I'm a hero because I'm going to see the movie in the theater., all while I'm thinking, "It'll be a long while before I do this again."

Those trailers could have been shown before the movie's start time, instead of the other advertainment they show then. Rather than telling me going to theaters is a magical experience, they could have respect for my time and start the freaking magical experience already. And they wouldn't need to tell me I'm a hero for consuming their product if they just made it so I didn't not want to do it.

Short of it, I'd rather watch pretty much any movie at home, these days. It is a better experience overall. Sure, there are some exceptions. A movie like Avatar, those type of big spectacle movies, yeah, bring on that huge screen. But for most everything else, why put yourself through a worse and more inconvenient experience?

@Jogo Bonito Fc Good question. As a consumer, the model I naturally favor was when Netflix had just about everything for a pretty low price. But I don't live in a fairy tale and know that companies will be out to get the best profits they can, the future of streaming feels pretty bleak to me.
I will say this, I can tell people are tired when a movie that could've done well in theatres 6 years ago goes straight to Netflix, or a good show is on HBOmax but it's already over after 8 weeks, or a bombastic blockbuster budget Disney property gets dragged out as a 6 hour long limited series. The video mentions that cable actually makes money. Maybe it's not about how cable is so much more expensive, but that TV budget shows are cheaper and can go on for much longer. What I'm getting at here is maybe it's time for movies to go back to the movies, maybe the TV doesn't have to it all.

Honestly, if FAST platforms grow to be the staple, especially ones with cable-like channels, I'll probably drift toward those. I have a youtube video going in the background when I'm doing darn near everything, but it bounces between too boring that I turn it off or too engaging for me to do the thing in the foreground. I pined not too long ago for something that's like a streaming platform with me choosing what to watch, but maybe choosing to shuffle the episodes and, ironically enough, pining to have ad breaks to break it up. Honestly, we kinda need ad breaks like from cable. Something to force us up to throw lunch in the oven or move the loads of laundry or just look down at our phone while watching our show. As someone who struggles with the sitting motionless watching youtube videos thing, having the thing I'm watching basically DEMAND I do something else other than develop bedsores is very welcome to me.

The thing that's absolutely maddening to me is that old Cable could still exist in the current year, people mostly shifted due to a lack of meaningful content on many channels. So many channels opted to do cheap reality TV for a short term profit while diluting the brands of channels.

There are way to many streaming services. I refuse to sign up for them. If there is only one or two shows that I might want to watch on a particular service I will wait until there are more then sign up for a month and cancel. We need to combine some of them together again, and stop having all the new shows that are cancelled after a few shows.

My big frustration with Disney+ right now, besides its reliance on Marvel and Star Wars, is how bad it still is at announcing upcoming content. The list of new stuff will mostly be filled up with shows that aren't necessarily altogether new, but just released a new weekly episode, pushing all new releases to the back of the list. Sometimes they will promote the big releases someplace noticeable in the app, like the latest Marvel thing, but other things don't get mentioned. Instead, I have to go to third party sources who publish lists of their releases, and sometimes even they miss things.

I almost missed the release of season 2 of the Owl House because it wasn't advertised anywhere and it was gone from the list of new releases after just a week. Netflix are better at this; their app has a section for new and most-viewed content, and will list specific release dates two weeks in advance; they also inform of big releases a while in advance even when they don't have a public release date

@All Things Film Starting a streaming service does not mean a new revenue stream for the studio. They already HAD a revenue stream, which was licensing that content to another distributor. The theory is that if they distribute it themselves, they cut out the middle man, and effectively get retail revenue rather than wholesale. But that falls apart if the act of cutting out the middleman means that fewer end consumers will find their product. Earning retail from ten people is not as good as earning wholesale from twenty. There are too many streaming services, and a lot of the public have given up on all of them.

Aside from the lack of competition, it also used to work for Netflix back in the day because Netflix was basically a bonus library. You pay a small monthly fee, and you have access to a bunch of old movies and TV shows. It wasn't meant to be a replacement for cable. It was a way for people who didn't want to pay $60 per month for cable to have access to some convenient entertainment for $10 per month, and a way for those who really loved entertainment to have access to on-demand older content in addition to cable.

Now, the streaming services have sunk billions into new content to try to become the it thing.

Had Disney just been a library of all past Disney-owned content, plus Disney-owned films and TV shows once they left theatres/their seasons completed - basically, Disney Netflix - then they might have only gotten half the subscribers but their costs would be a small fraction of what they are now. It would basically be the cost of server space and employees needed to administer the service, versus that plus billions of dollars to create new, medicore Star Wars and Marvel shows. It would be a bonus product that plenty of Disney lovers would pay a small monthly fee for, and that would be profitable.

I mean, if these networks would get it through their thick skulls that everyone shed cable to reduce consumer costs and would just work with one or two aggregator streaming services to keep everything on fewer platforms with more options, they'd probably find greater success. But that would mean sharing the pie instead of trying to have all of it with every network having their own damned streaming service with a scant handful of worthwhile things to watch. These greedy companies need to evolve or die.

I don't understand how they haven't just done the thing that worked for decades: Release cheaper serial shows with new content once a week, as it is produced, in digestible 30min episodes. I don't know what they're thinking spending millions of dollars on a 12 hour movie and dropping it all at once just to try to keep people who are already paying you.

I tell you one better. After a while many streaming services forget your subscription so I basically watched every new season of some shows in my free trial month. The netflix problem for me is that they dont seem to have a too strict vetting process. Yeah they produced many great shows but sometimes they get lost in a flood of mediocre shows that I garantue nobody even checked because they are awful. It basically feels like modern online journalism like some newspapers want to push out articles so fast that articles have now typos and sentences that dont make sense because obviously nobody read them after writing. With tv shows its the same I mean if they were serious about the green light process a chicago party aunt never got made.

Honestly the huge flux of streaming services battling it out for the right to stream certain IP's basically caused this massive drop off. They did this to themselves. There was a few years where paying for a streaming service was just the most practical thing to do. But now it's all spread out across all the big services, I'd rather just go back to torrenting the things I actually want to watch instead of constantly trying to figure out where I can watch the show I want and paying for multiple subscriptions? It's their own fault.

I think that splitting the pie of content into many subscription services has driven demand down , increases prices, and encouraged people to take to the high seas.

However the fact that many subscription services like Disney create garbage content, that cost an absolute fortune to make ,damages their brand, and sends their subscribers fleeing doesn't help them. I used to love star wars , star trek,LOTR, now I could not care less.

The minute streaming went from an archival service that could offer access to already existing media that could be licensed for a minimal fee, and became the primary avenue for AAA first run content, it was doomed to fail. This is the MoviePass situation all over again.

I also think younger people just aren't watching a lot of movies and shows like the older people are. That's a pretty huge demographic.

For me a big issue is the content selection. They all billed these services as a way to watch all their content, anytime. But...Disney rotates many of their classic movies. Paramount has licenced Star Trek films and South Park to HBO Max. Peacock doesn't have many of their classic sitcoms like Night Court or Family Ties. Not to mention the lie that was ad free, now becoming full of ads.

@blueNyellow Most filmmakers salaries are fixed anyway. They don't get paid more if the movie becomes a success and makes more money then the production cost. So "stealing" from this profit from the capitalist is indifferent to the filmmakers and crew.

I feel like netflix isn't going to be affected by this because netflix has a good marketing strategy and it keeps subscribers. It has good diverse content and isn't just relaying on the property they have. They create new shows (some can be good some can be bad) but also aquired property that keeps the app fresh. I feel like disney + is strugglling because it is not focusing on just entertainment it is focused on being an activist, and most people just want good movies and shows. So when people see shows like she-hulk and they tell their friends about how bad it is, they wouldn't want to subscribe to disney plus. Netflix is being is putting out good shows and good movies while disney+ is focusing on becoming activist and when they fire the people that need to be fired they get sued. Disney need new employees because if they don't they will lose more subscribers.

If you're old enough to remember cable was originally supposed to not have ads because the revenue came from subscription payments and then slowly it became just like network with nothing but ads and now the same thing with streaming is happening
