Wayfaring Stranger
HP lovecrafts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Travelling through this world of woe;
And there's no sickness, toil, no danger
In that bright land to which I go.
I'm going there to meet my brothers,
And from that land we'll find a way;
I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger,
Looking for a brighter day.

One of these mornings and it won't be long
All men will rise, stand side by side;

Than hand in hand we'll stand together,
Vibrations calling all mankind.
I'm going there to meet my brothers,
And from that land we'll find a way;
I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger,
Looking for a brighter day.
Brighter day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of HP Lovecraft's version of "Wayfaring Stranger" depict a pilgrim or traveler on a spiritual journey through a world fraught with difficulties, where sickness, toil, and danger are rife. The singer of the song, a poor wayfaring stranger, is seeking refuge from the harshness of life in a brighter land where his brothers await him. Lovecraft's rendition of the classic gospel song was influenced by his interest in spirituality, as well as his exploration of various religious traditions and occult practices.

The singer's longing for an idyllic afterlife marks the theme of the song: the desire to seek a better life beyond this world, a place free from misery and suffering. His desire to meet his brothers in that bright land suggests a reunion with loved ones who have passed away or a sense of kinship with fellow pilgrims of faith. Lovecraft's use of parallelism in the second and fourth lines of the first stanza highlights the singer's unwavering belief in the promise of a better place. The chorus of the song, "I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger, Looking for a brighter day," reflects the song's overall theme of hope and the search for redemption.

Herkes birden ayaklanacak
Sırt sırta verecekler

Titreşimler bütün insanlığı çağrıyor
Orada kardeşlerimle buluşacağım
O aydınlık yerde 'yola' ışık tutacağız

I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Travelling through this veil of eldritch horror;
And there's nothing but sickness, toil and danger
In that cursed land to which I go.
I'm going there to meet my brothers,
And from that land we'll never leave;
I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger,
Looking for my sanit-eee.

One of these chill mornings and it won't be long
All men will rise, stand side by side;
Blind and damned we'll chant together,
Blasphemous mantras cursing all mankind.
I'm going there to meet my brothers,
And from that land we'll never leave;
I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger,
Looking for my sanit-eee.
Sanit-eee

June 11, 1968 live at The Kaleidoscope: H.P. Lovecraft, The Don Ellis Orchestra & Kaleidoscope w/ David Lindley & Chester Krill. The most eclectic concert I had the very good fortune to catch; WOW! I recently saw an original poster for this concert at Rockaway Records in Silverlake (LA), but didn't have the extra $275 to buy it. I'm still sick over missing out on such a great momento, but the memory of it ain't too shabby.

Bought this album in 1968 I think. I had heard a few selections on an alternative radio station in SLC, Utah, I was in high school. I'm a seventy year old now, but I remember really liking this album and playing it a lot.

I saw this group in 1968 when I was in high school. They were at a local concert venue in Arlington Heights, IL, called "The Cellar". It was an old shoe factory with all the insides removed. No seating. HP Lovecraft was one of my favorite bands, but I saw the Cream, Blue Cheer, Bangor Flying Circus, Association, Young Rascals and many other bands there. I have this LP, and am just about to have it digitized.

You are a lucky man to have grown up during those fantastic years.

This is a classic 60's version of a traditional folk song from one of the best (but unknown and underappreciated) psychedelic bands of the 60's...I love the harmonies, arrangement, presenation...but I need MORE COWBELL! HPL has a number of memorable songs, some of which are not on youtube yet, like I've been wrong before. There's a double CD available for not too much money, of their first album and a live set at Fillmore which is essential for any serious 60's music collection.
