THINKING OF YOU
Hall Terry Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
i ought to be thinking of you
but the friendship's built on trust
and that's something you never do
well who knows maybe tomorrow
we can share each other's sorrow
and compare our grave manner
as we wave our lonely banners
if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
if you decide to change your views
i'm hinking of you
you can walk away from loneliness
anytime you choose
and you're the sort of person
that hasn't anything to lose
but who cares maybe tomorrow
you can lead and i could follow
so walk where angels fear to tread
for everything you've ever wanted
and if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
if you can spare an hour or two
you'll know what to do
i could be the one thing there
in your our of need
so if you decide to change your views
i'm thinking of you
let's roll the dice
in the fools paradise...
share moonlit nights
breathing nothing but lies
let's open our eyes...
we should take a bus to somewhere else
to somewhere new
thank god we're alive
and bite off more than we can chew
do the things that just don't matter
laugh while others look in anger
stumble over four leaf clovers
and say goodbye to lonely banners
if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
through thick and thin i bear it and grin
and never give in
if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
through thick and thin i bear it and grin
and never give in
i could be the one thing there
in your our of need
so if you decide to change your views
i'm thinking of you
The lyrics of "Thinking of You" by Hall Terry depict a complex relationship between two people. The singer has developed feelings for a close friend, yet is hesitant to act on them due to their strong friendship built on trust. The uncertainty of their future and the fear of losing that trust prevents the singer from expressing their emotions. However, the singer still hopes that there could be a chance for them to be together in the future, to share their sorrows and wave their lonely banners together.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea of thinking about each other. The singer reassures their friend that they will be thinking of them, even if their views change. The singer believes that they could be the one thing their friend needs in their hour of need. The lyrics are full of hope, although the circumstances seem complicated. They encourage the listener to take risks, to do things that might not matter, and to laugh while others look in anger. The song ends on a positive note, with the singer's determination to never give up on the friendship or their feelings.

So sad to hear of the passing of Terry Hall. Such an immense part of my teenage years. What an incredible catalogue of songs he has left us 😢

Both Terry Hall and Kirsty Maccoll are very underrated! So much more to Terry than just the specials! This is a classic and always will be!!!!

Very sad too on hearing the news 10 minutes ago. Terry Hall was a very, very brave guy. By being open about his past, he must have helped thousands of adults deal with mental health problems stemming from childhood 'experiences'. I was slightly too young for the Specials but I bought everything by the Fun Boy 3 and I played the first Colourfield LP to death. I can't think of anyone else in music remotely like him. 63 is no age at all. Very sad.
