Boyfriend
Hardy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't wanna be your boyfriend anymore
I'm tired of talkin' 'bout babies and diamond rings
And I'm so sick of driving clear across town every night from my place to yours, girl
I don't wanna be your boyfriend anymore

Yeah, I been thinkin' a lot
'Bout goin' all-in on what we got
I got my eye on a twenty-acre spot
With a fence in the dirt, yeah, but first, girl
I wanna call up your dad
Spend all of my coffee can cash
And ask you, "What's it gon' be?"
Puttin' one knee on the floor
'Cause I don't wanna be your boyfriend anymore

Yeah, I don't wanna have to wonder what it's like
To hear you introduce yourself with my last name
To see you floatin' down some outta town church all dressed in white, girl
I don't wanna have to wonder what it's like

Yeah, I been thinkin' a lot
'Bout goin' all-in on what we got
I got my eye on a twenty-acre spot
With a fence in the dirt, yeah, but first, girl
I wanna call up your dad
Spend all of my coffee can cash
And ask you, "What's it gon' be?"
Puttin' one knee on the floor
'Cause I don't wanna be your boyfriend anymore, yeah
Oh
Anymore, yeah, yeah

Yeah I wanna get too sunburned with you
All-inclusive in Hawaii
Right after I say my vows and kiss ya
Like no one else is watching
In front of God and everybody

Yeah, I been thinking a lot
'Bout goin' all-in on what we got
I got my eye on a twenty-acre spot
With a fence in the dirt, yeah, but first, girl
I wanna call up your dad
Spend all of my coffee can cash
And ask you, "What's it gon' be?"
Puttin' one knee on the floor
'Cause I don't wanna be your boyfriend anymore

I don't wanna be your boyfriend anymore, yeah, yeah
I don't wanna be your boyfriend anymore

Overall Meaning

In “Boyfriend,” Hardy sings about being tired of being in a casual and temporary relationship, and yearning for something more meaningful and permanent. He’s tired of merely being a boyfriend and talking about babies and diamond rings. He has his sights set on a twenty-acre property and marrying the girl he loves. Hardy wants to take things to the next level, and he’s ready to go all-in.

Hardy wants to marry the girl he loves and doesn’t want to just be her boyfriend anymore, he wants to be her future husband. He wants to call up her dad and ask for her hand in marriage, spend all of his coffee can cash, and get down on one knee, and propose to her. He doesn’t want to just wonder what it’s like to hear her introduce herself with his last name or see her walking down the aisle in a white dress; he wants to experience that with her. And when they’re finally married, they’ll go to Hawaii and spend time as a married couple, just the two of them.

Overall, "Boyfriend" is a song about taking the next step in a relationship and making a commitment to each other. Hardy is no longer content with just being a boyfriend and is ready to make a lifelong commitment to the girl he loves.
