Drifting
Harry Connick Jr. Lyrics

I'm really not that naïve
You wear a smile but it's drifting, drifting
While I wear my heart on my sleeve
I feel your coldness against my skin
I know what follows the autumn wind
And though you say your heart isn't drifting, drifting
You're drifting and I'm losing you
I feel your coldness against my skin
I know what follows the autumn wind
And though you say your heart isn't drifting, drifting
The words simply don't ring true
You're drifting and I'm losing you
The lyrics of Harry Connick Jr.'s song "Drifting" speaks about a lover's doubts about the faithfulness of their relationship. The singer observes the drifting that is happening in their partner's eyes and behavior, and it makes them unsure and uneasy about their current situation. The first line already sets a melancholy tone as it suggests a detachment that is happening between the couple. The singer admits that they are not entirely naïve and sees beyond the smile that their partner is wearing. They can sense the drifting, the feeling of slowly losing their grip on their loved one. The singer's honesty is evident when they confess to wearing their heart on their sleeve, further implying vulnerability and authenticity in their feelings.
The lyrics also convey a sense of fear as the singer can feel their partner's coldness against their skin. It is this same coldness that leads to the singer's realization that their partner's heart is not as true as they claim it to be. They see through the words and recognize the drifting that their partner is trying to hide. However, despite acknowledging the situation, the singer still feels helpless in losing their loved one.
Overall, Harry Connick Jr.'s song "Drifting" is a poignant exploration of the insecurity and doubts that exist in many romantic relationships. The song's message is a reminder of the importance of openness, honesty, and communication between couples to prevent such drifting from happening.

I was there too. Dragged along reluctantly by a long gone partner. She drifted away from my side and my memory.. but the song and the performance have stuck in my head for the last 30 years. I seem to remember him dragging out the conductor for audience praise and saying he had co written it? Or, maybe my mind fails me ..
