Can't It
Harry James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wrong
Would it be wrong to kiss
Seeing I feel like this
Would it be wrong to try?

Wrong
Would it be wrong to stay
Here in your arms this way
Under this starry sky?

If it is wrong
Then why were you sent to me
Why am I content to be
With you forever?

So
When I need you so much
And I have waited so long

It must be right
It can't be wrong

Overall Meaning

Harry James's song "It Can't Be Wrong" is a love song that explores the question of morality when it comes to love. The opening lyrics "Would it be wrong to kiss, seeing I feel like this? Would it be wrong to try?" convey a sense of uncertainty and apprehension that often comes with new relationships. The lyrics ask whether it is socially acceptable or ethically correct to engage in acts of intimacy when deep feelings are involved. The lyrics suggest that love itself is not wrong as it cannot be ignored, and it asserts that it would be a mistake to deny the feelings that one has for another.

The song progresses into the chorus, where it explores the idea that if love is what an individual needs and desires, then it cannot be wrong. The lyric "When I need you so much, and I have waited so long, it must be right, it can't be wrong" asserts that true love surpasses moral judgment, as it is a feeling that is essential to an individual's wellbeing. The lyrics suggest that love is powerful and essential, and the feelings that one experiences while in love are inherently positive.

Overall, Harry James's "It Can't Be Wrong" explores themes of morality and love, questioning whether emotional intimacy is acceptable and how true love should override moral judgment. The lyrics beautifully capture the mix of uncertainty and excitement that comes with falling in love, and they suggest that love is so powerful that it overcomes moral taboos.

It is really a shame it wasn't on the original LP, although I did have it on the cassette version years ago.  This is one of the best Harry James tracks of later years in my opinion too.
