It's Been A Long Long Time
Harry James & His Orchestra & Kitty Kallen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

'Cause it's been so long
Since I held you tight
When we said good night
It's been so long
Honey, can't you see
What you've done to me?
I've been in a kind of daze
For days and days and days
Feelin' blue, missin' you
In, oh, so many ways
'Cause it was so nice
When we had that date
Every night at eight
It was so nice
Then we said good-bye
What a fool was I

Let me get back in your arms where I belong
'Cause it's been, oh, so long

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Harry James’s “It’s Been So Long” convey a sense of longing and nostalgia for a past love that has been gone for a long time. The opening line “Cause it’s been so long since I held you tight” immediately sets the mood for the entire song. James sings about not being able to shake off the memories of his lover and how much he misses her presence. He seems to be in a daze for days and days, feeling blue and missing her in every possible way. He reminisces about a time when they used to go out on dates every night at eight and how nice it was to be with her. The phrase “What a fool was I” suggests that he might have been the reason for their separation, but he wants to make up for it and get back to where he belongs - in her arms.

The song is soulful and emotional, with James’s trumpet serving as the perfect accompaniment to the lyrics. The melody is slow and melancholic, almost reflecting the mood of the singer. The repetition of the phrase “it’s been so long” throughout the song acts as a reminder of the time that has passed since the singer last saw his lover. The song leaves you with a sense of sorrow and longing, as if you too are experiencing the same emotions as the singer.

Lyrics:
Never thought that you would be
Standing here so close to me
There's so much I feel that I should say
But words can wait until some other day
Kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It’s been a long, long time
Haven't felt like this, my dear
Since I can't remember when
It’s been a long, long time
You'll never know how many dreams
I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time

I am so glad people heard this in endgame and love it. I learned it from my grandparents when I was a little kid. They were teenagers during WWII, their older brothers fought in it. So that time and this song have a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for posting it!
Ps... I have it in an old CD collection, a 6 disc set of WWII classics.

I was so insanely exited to find it in a box of miscellaneous records for $5, best day or my life haha

I discovered this song during CA: The Winter Soldier, and it's summed up my romance and happy marriage to a longtime friend. It had literally been a long, long time that we knew one another, each of us in a difficult relationship...and suddenly we were both alone, and lonely. So, things happened...lovely things.

@jrcadet4

UPDATE: While I was working out the other morning this song began to play---and my wife, who works from home quite a bit, came into the room, enticed me off my exercise bike---and we shared, a sweet, slow dance. Lovely.

Is it weird that I’m only 17 but I miss the 1940’s in a way

@jacquelineklinges

No, it is not weird at all! I mean, I’m only 19 and I miss the old times as well. I don’t know why but it just feels like I was actually there. I am literally in love with anything that’s vintage from 1940s-1980s and medieval Celtic times, cuz I’m an old soul. So, you probably are, too, if you like old music like this. But don’t be afraid to be an old soul. It’s actually a good thing because listening to music like this is extraordinary and comforting that it just gives you such a nostalgic, rapturous feeling. 😊❤️

@drdimento

So awesome. If you ever wanna talk that era just say the word. I come just after that area born in the late 40’s, raised in the 50’s, turning teen and adult in the 60’s.

@mbh50mbh

Nothing weird about it
