Breathe
He Is We Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Harness your heart, and be still now.
Quiet that mind that will wander,
All sorts of dark alleys.
Tragedy strikes your self esteem,
Constantly waiting for an ending,
To all of this.

She opens her eyes,
Suddenly she cries.
Can we help her, can we help her?
And she replies.

You know, I fake it oh so well,
That God himself can’t tell.
What I mean and why my words are,
Less than parallel,
With my feet.
You ask me what I need.
And all I really need,
Is to breathe.

Oooohh.
Ahhaah.

People, they seem so interested.
Only a few get invested,
With all the aches and pains.
Doctor oh, doctor,
Please help her.
I fear she may not be breathing.
Blue lips, and doe eyes,
That’s her disguise.

You know, I fake it oh so well,
That God himself can’t tell.
What I mean and why my words are,

Less than parallel.
With my feet,
You ask me what I need.
And all I really need,
Is to breathe.

Oooooh
Ooooh, oh
Oooooh
Oooooh
(Oooooh)

Give me some space to breathe,
(Ooooh, oh)
I need a little room to breathe.
Give me some space to breathe,
All I need is a little room to breathe.

I fake it oh so well,
That God can’t tell.
You know, I fake it oh so well,
That God himself can’t tell.
What I mean and why my words are,
Less than parallel.
With my feet,
You ask me what I need.
And all I really need,

Is to breathe.
Let me breathe.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of He Is We's song "Breathe" delve into the emotional struggles of an individual dealing with their own personal issues. The metaphoric language of "harness your heart" suggests the need for inner emotional control to achieve stillness. The "dark alleys" mentioned in the lyrics symbolizes the fears and doubts that clog our minds, leading to low self-esteem. The character in the song is portrayed as longing for an ending to their pain, which is reflected in the line "constantly waiting for an ending."

The character in the song is also faced with the harsh reality of pretending to be okay. The line "I fake it oh so well, that God himself can't tell" suggests that the individual is so skilled at concealing their true feelings that even a divine entity would not be able to see through their facade. The allusion to God in this line can also be interpreted as a cry for help, as the afflicted individual wishes for someone to understand what they are going through.

In the chorus, the character begs for space to breathe. This can be seen as a metaphor for needing space to process one's emotions and escape the pressures of life. The character emphasizes that what they really need amidst this struggle is something as simple as being able to breathe.

Overall, "Breathe" by He Is We demonstrates the struggles of those who may look put together on the outside, but are struggling on the inside. The song highlights the importance of recognizing one's need for space and inner peace.

I seriously just listened to this song 10000000 times and I still cant stop crying.

My stomach is churning,
My heart is yearning,
These tears are burning,
I cant keep running,
Why so cunning,
And oh so stunning,
You take the breath out of my chest,
To my heart you are never a guest,
Always welcome, unless..

You dont let me breathe
Why cant you see,
You are hurting that part of me,
Where only you can be...

I was introduced to He Is We music in 2013, reminiscing my memories of suffering from depression for the 1st time. I have always come to realize how much of a big role their music played in my coping mechanisms, it's like whenever I would just listen to a song it would help with my anxiety. Whenever I would hear a song of theirs, I'd just instantly become happy, it was such a over-whelming radiant change of mood. I really love HIW, definitely a prime factor in who I am today & how grateful I am in any given situation I was in to even be lucky enough to know who they were.

The first time I just listened to this song, I was like "This is a good song!" I started listening to it a lot and then I sang along just now and I felt like my chest caved in and I broke down and began to cry. This song is my theme song. <3
