Quiet Life
Heaven Seventeen/Japan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Boys, now the times are changing
The going could get rough
Boys, would that ever cross your mind?
Boys, are you contemplating moving out somewhere?
Boys, will you ever find the time?

Here we are stranded
Somehow it seems the same
Beware, here comes the quiet life again

Boys, now the country's only miles away from here
Boys, do you recognize the signs?
Boys, when these driving hands push against the tracks
Boys, it's too late to wonder why

Here we are stranded
Somehow it seems the same
Beware, here comes the quiet life again

Now as you turn to leave
Never looking back
Will you think of me?
If you ever, could it ever stop?

Oh, oh, ooh , the quiet life

Here we are stranded

Somehow it seems the same
Beware, here comes the quiet life again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Quiet Life" by Heaven Seventeen/Japan speak of a sense of restlessness and contemplation. The first stanza addresses the boys, asking if they've ever considered moving out or if they recognize the signs of a changing world. It seems like the singer of the song is trying to get them to question the status quo and not just accept the quiet life that is being offered to them. The second stanza speaks of being stranded and how everything seems the same, as if they're stuck in a loop. The last stanza seems to be the singer bidding the boys farewell and wondering if they'll ever think of them once they've moved on. The chorus speaks of the quiet life that seems to loom over everything like a specter.

The song seems to be a commentary on the monotony of life and the decision-making that comes with it. It's asking if we'll ever move beyond our comfort zones and seek out more in the world. The quiet life seems to be a metaphor for settling and accepting whatever comes our way without questioning it.

a 1980's masterpiece... i can remember cycling around the country roads of north Colchester listening to this on my Sony Walkman all those years ago... It still holds its own - a timeless piece of music :-)

Colchester, latin Camelodunum, probably Camelot in medieval latin.

Underrated band, in my opinion, especially in the USA where I live. I always thought the lead singer had a great voice. To me this is one of the things that defined the 80's; great singing talents. Its a shame these times are so far behind us now but on the other hand I am grateful that I lived through these times.

i moved to LA in 1982 and introduced my new american friends to groups like heaven17 etc, they were blown away by the new romantic era coming out of the UK.

'If half the things they say, are a quarter true of me'. Awesome lyrics, I bought this single back then, 15 years old. Nothing now compares.
