@Jeff Campbell it's a known fact that movies are only BASED on the real story, they leave out certain details or switch things up to make it more interesting, or worse, skew things because the filmmaker is biased. Either way, they both got what they deserved, and I'm pretty sure you'd say the same if the genders were reversed. Most men do.

I would never have believed this movie because it is about someone who cant be real! Its about a raw mental patient. But I have listened to her trial and the parole hearings and she should have bern placed in a mental istitution and medicated. Prison doesnt seem the right answer for Betty though. They are treating a criminal but not a true mental patient.

Betty in my opinion was a great mother until she lost her mind.

I get that. I believe that she made him. he could not have gotten all that education if he had to actually help with the kids or around the house. Linda lost any respect that I would have given her because she started a relationship with a married man. That is so wrong. Dan didnt need kids because he loved work so much.

I can absolutely understand her anger, rage and bitterness and frustration after working so hard to helping him through law school and being the primary parent on board. It was so unfair and selfish of him. And to top it all off he had to tell her she was old, fat, ugly and stupid. But how she handled her rage during it all was detrimental to her and her children.

Exactly! Women who knowingly get involved with married men really make me ill. There is no reason to do that. Not that they or anyone deserves to be murdered but it is hard for me to feel that badly for Dan or Linda. Given that Betty dealt with mental abuse and abandonment and after all her hard work early in their marriage and her having and raising 4 kids. He callously chucked her aside like trash and then tried to screw her out of what was half hers and he emotionally abused her and gaslighted her trying to make her think she was crazy and he took her kids away to boot. Linda the side piece wasn't there for all that. He was finally wealthy when she horned in. Had he been financially fair and kind and respectful, the divorce would have gone a lot better. Also, he should have waited to get the younger model until after the divorce. He virtually took everything from her. He eventually reaped what he sowed when she finally did go fully nuts.

Kudos to the assistant for Dan who observed Linda taking over and quit. I love Betty's complaining. All her beefs are sooo accurate for what she is not getting in the relationship with a narcissist. She does all the work to make sure everything thrives, including him, and he just accepts things with no real appreciation and validation of what is holding him up while he makes demands for more. It's so weirdly refreshing to understand that in the 1980's, there wasn't much crime like this involving women so this movie was made because the story is a one-off. Now in 2023,there's so many of these types of crimes going on that it would be impossible to make a movie out of every case. Gawd, I miss the 1980's and 1990's; a simpler way of life and understanding.

@Arnitra King actually Betty went to the same private school in eastchester ny that several friends parents went to & her family being from bronxville ny I went to private school there the town is extremely small at the time only 1000 people lived there & is only .8 miles in area so when the murders happened being national news u can imagine how hotly discussed this case was in the town Betty grew up in & where her parents & siblings resided in. Our teachers discussed the case in school & as I said I grew up near where her then parents lived. My friends & I walked or we drove past their family home. So I did know about this case. We discussed it regularly. The TV movies came out not long after the trial.

I am woman but his wife was always screaming, never happy. He wasn’t cheating on her, it was all her in her head, until they separated because she was a real pain, always lowering him. She was acting insane despite when he tried to make it easy for her. She has kids and made their lives miserable during the divorce. I feel the movie missed a critical part of the story as it starts at the point Dan met Linda and was well established in his career and earning lots of money. It depicts Betty as a lady who lunches and shops. It doesn’t show the years of hardship when she supported him thru college, taking on a childminder role amongst other jobs and struggling to live above the poverty line . This makes it look as though they always had the silver spoon.

This also shows Betty as curt, cold and mean. If you watch the interviews with her she comes across as warm and vulnerable.

It also depicts Linda as all sweetness and light, whereas many reports are that she was a manipulative golddigger who made a calculated play for the boss. Difficult to know what’s true.

I read until the twelfth of Never by Bella Stumbo. It's a great read about this whole case and really goes into detail about the deadly divorce. According to this book Linda was an airline stewardess prior to landing the job at the law firm. Allegedly she was fired due to some inappropriate language and behavior of a sexual nature.

yes, i read that book and it was also very good. Theres always 2 sides to every story. In most cases, no one is always Snow White. That is why there is more of the story in the Netflix series Dirty John, but start off with season 2 because the first season does not jive with the rest of the seasons. It does show more of Dan and Lindas darker sides. They displayed their sexual romps at times in front of the kids and There was more than just the linda affair before linda. The heinous murders were of course, the ultimate and final result played out against dan and linda. However, due mainly because of bettys other violent acts against them, the world only sees bettys side. This movie should have been a 3 parter to include those early years and dans darker side.

@Penelope Mace I hold Master's Degree, what are you talking about? She (Linda) was his mistress for two years or so, after he left Betty, he was legally separated and about a year later got bifurcated divorce finalized. Linda was no "mistress" since he left his wife, but did so legally.

In short, Dan was having AFFAIR while being married and living with his wife (from 1983 to 1985).

He got bifurcated divorce...meaning settlement "divorce" did not happen..only five years later.
Betty was legally entitled to half of everything they had, however because of Epstein credits, Dan charged her five years later for half of every dime he gave her after the day he walked out.He even (as a President f San Diego bar association) had judge to base everything on the value of his Law Practice on the day Dan walked out, not five years later ( which was WAY more).
So, Betty received $28,000...Dan was making close to two mill a year.
Dan was not conflicted as you put it, he wanted young Linda and that's it....he also did not want to share $$$ with Betty.

She didn't care how much it hurt her children. That's just not acceptable at all. The Dr's told betty no more pregnancies as she had some medical issues but Dan wanted more sons so several miscarriages later she had Dan the 4th & Rhett. Dan wanted more sons but the Dr's said no more. She had 2 more miscarriages & betty told Dan she had to stop. He was a strict Irish catholic as well so no birth control so she tied her tubes. A lot of the negative info about betty comes from oldest child Kim. She was a daddy's girl & has still never forgiven or softened towards her mom. Dab the 4th was on Oprah in 92 & seemed to understand his mom way more than Kim. In the years since he has totally turned on her. Her 2 kids Lee & Rhett love her dearly & begged for her parole. Amazing & sad how the kids reaned up & each side has a totally different view of their mom betty did her 30 yrs but the board wants more remorse. I say the woman is in her 70s it's time to parole her. If u have done ur time why do u need to have remorse ? I doubt she is gonna kill anyone else.

Had to read a bit into this story. The wife spent an entire decade carrying the family, working her finger to the bone before they got to the place of financial comfortability and luxury as is shown at the start of the movie. They struggled. She worked multiple jobs. The movie doesn't show that. It even suggested she married into money and him being successful when he says "Isn't that the reason you married me?" In real life, she literally held everything down while he was in both law and med school. That can't be easy, especially with kids. She put her own dreams on the back burner to help him achieve his. By the time it paid off I can see why she felt slighted by him by not even getting her the small things she wanted, and forcing things onto her because he was more invested in an image. She felt used, unappreciated and unacknowledged. Just a puppet. They only show her breaking point as if this was her normal behavior. She wasn't a spoiled brat throwing hissy fits. They failed to capture all the build up that happened, that I read about elsewhere.

Sidenote: This is like the real life prelude to Waiting to Exhale where essentially the same exact thing happened.

I'm very sorry to everyone in this comment section who has been through something so awful. Nothing feels worse than being treated like something one can discard and replace. We're living beings, not objects and we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, unless proven completely unworthy of both.
The issue with relationships is that a lot of people don't understand the meaning of love. They confuse lust and infatuation for love, then they rush into marriage and end up stuck with someone they don't love after the infatuation wears off and it always does, unfortunately. I recommend to spend time with the person for 3-5 years before making life altering decisions with them.

I understand her rage after working her ass off putting him through school and caring for 4 children. Its hard to forget that.she sacrificed her life for the benefit of her husband and their children. Something went horribly wrong in how she dealt with it. I believe he did alienate her legal abilities to find counsel being who he was. She also was the one that did that to herself because of her wild and unstable behavior. The more she did to him the more he made her pay the price and neither was ready to compromise. The mistress broke into her house and rummaged through her things. She did that because she knew if she got caught Dan would get her out of it because of who he was so there was some violation on both sides. A person cannot walk in someone's house and shoot them and she was wrong for doing that and deserved what she got and now Dan got the last word from his grave. I do believe the woman he was with made herself available to him and had the intention to break up his marriage by accepting invites to dinner and taking 7-hour lunches and she did not care that she was breaking up a marriage with 4 children involved. I believe that Dan intentionally made sure he used his clout and influence to take advantage of his wife to isolate her and took away her voice.

The scene of the daughter’s graduation when she starts photographing Linda and takes that last shot after being threatened😂 Her facial expression was priceless! This exact thing happened to me in my marriage. I can understand exactly how she felt. The rage and betrayal you feel is so real. Of course she took it too far by killing them but in your mind you seriously want to do these other things to make their lives hell!! I got nothing in my divorce as he ended up with the millions house kids & business, where as she could still live well. I would’ve taken my alimony and found some cute young boy toy and lived it up! Sad situation all the way around.

@luvbearbut i wish the kids healing and help with what I'm guessing is their medical bills from a lifetime of therapy thanks to the over-the-top horror show their drama queen mother put on.

You always do what is best for the children. I had a son but never married his mother. He is 24 years old now, has a college degree, a great wife, and I am so proud of him. Never once did I say anything negative about his mother. She is a great mom, and he has a tremendous stepfather (they divorced about a year ago). Point is, we did what was best for our son and never put him in a position to think negative. Was it all roses? No, however, we had very few differences, and when we did, we did not involve him. We always supported him; he was of most import, and still is to this day and always will be along with his new wife and their children when they have them.

It would be really hard if you slaved away raising 4 kids and working on top of it , putting your husband through college, then he passes you over for a younger woman . Although they didn't deserve to be murdered . And the poor kids loosing both parents.

It wasn’t just the cheating and divorce. They rubbed her face in it anddddd she had to share her kids with his other woman. I would never kill them, but I understand her unraveling and hurt. Side note, Linda telling Dan that she’s sorry he “has to deal with this but now i do too” just smacks of lack of accountability on her part

In all of this I feel sorry for the kids. The adults made choices and did things that contributed to the outcome but the poor kids had nothing to do with it. They were pretty much used as pawns in an emotional war by the very people who should have been protecting them and putting their needs first. And in the end they lost both their parents and any hope of a stable home.

Also this movie showing Dan as a good father taking care of the kids after he and Betty separated is inaccurate. The kids did testify that their dad was not a good parent. It took a while fir their dad to adjust to being a father. Betty was the active parent before they separated.
She had many friends, other moms and used socialize with them. She was the social one.
Dan was all business.

One important bit that was left out of the movie is that when Betty bashed Dan's door with her car she also knocked out the alarm system. Subsequently, Dan said he would get it fixed "one of these days" but never did. If he had, Betty would have still gotten into his house but Dan and Linda would have been warned before Betty got all the way to their bedroom.

I relate to this story because this happened to me except my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer during our divorce..no murders..my late husbands mistress was 22 yrs younger than me..he actually married her from his hospital bed days before he passed..he left his life insurance to her and other monies I never knew about..the list goes on..that was in 2009..

Rebecca I feel for you,mine got what he thought he wanted,after they married I finally felt relief, his marriage only lasted 8 years she died of heart attack, i grieved for him and my two young children, mean while I married the best man alive, funny how it works. But she stole him, and that's on her and him. However he came to me years later and asked for forgiveness, I had long earlier had.
