Born the daughter of Dvora und Abraham Schneider (the name is German and means tailor), she studied piano before starting to perform as a singer in venues in New England and New York.
Between 1978 and 1984 she achieved some success as a rock singer in Germany; her song Rock'n' Roll Gypsy even reached the top 10 record charts. 1980 she toured as an opener with the German rock legend Udo Lindenberg. She played one of the leads and the love interest of Eddie Wilson in the 1983 film Eddie and the Cruisers, which has since gained a huge cult following, especially in unusual places for an American film such as Nepal, Russia and especially Germany, where Schneider had name recognition.[1]
In 1987 she began her acting career at the Theater des Westens in Berlin playing the Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret. From 1995 to 1998 she performed as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Since 1998 she mainly performs chansons and songs with lyrics pieces by Kurt Weill. She worked with Eberhard Schoener on the recording of the Short Opera (1996) and on the goodbye-song for the TV series Derrick. From 1999 to 2001 she performed as Eva Perón in the musical Evita at the Bad Hersfelder Festspiele.
In 2007 Schneider released the CD Just Like A Woman [1]

I don't need a long haired baby to love me true as true.
AII I need is a rock and roll band and somewhere new to play
And I'm on my way
I'm on my way.
I'm a rock and roll gypsy
I'm a rock and roll gypsy
I never needed anyone.
My life isn't easy
baby
it's the life that I need.
I got music livin' inside-a-me
I gotta set it free.
AII I need is a rock and roll band . . .
I've got to playin' my music
babe - it's all I know
Where it wants to take me
honey
I've got to go
I've got to go
I've got to go
AII I want from livin' is just to be left alone.
AII I need is an open road 'cos I'm a roliin' stone.
AII I need is a rock and roll band
I'm a rock and roll gypsy
and I'm'on the run
I - I never needed anyone. I - I never needed anyone. . . .
Helen Schneider's song "Rock'n' Roll Gypsy" captures the essence of a musician who is dedicated to the art of rock and roll. It speaks of the liberation that comes with being able to express oneself and connect with others through music. The lyrics suggest that one can find freedom in being a musician on the run, with the only requirement being a rock and roll band and a place to play.
The first verse states that the singer of the song doesn't need people telling them what to do or a significant other to love them. Instead, they only require their music and the creative outlet that comes with it. The chorus further emphasizes this sentiment, with the singer describing themselves as a rock and roll gypsy who is free to roam and explore the world without the need for any attachments.
The second verse highlights the challenges that come with a life as a musician, but it is also the life that they need. Music is at the core of their being, and they need to set it free through creative expression. The bridge describes the singer's single-minded dedication to their craft and their willingness to follow wherever their music takes them.
Overall, "Rock'n' Roll Gypsy" is an ode to the freedom and liberation that comes with being a musician, with no need for any external validation or support.
