Epiphany
Helena Bonham Carter & Johnny Depp Lyrics

Out
Mr. Todd-
Out, I say out!

All this running and shouting
What is it now, dear?
I had him and then
And that sailor busted in
I saw them both running down the street
I had him!
His throat was there, beneath my hand
There, there, dear, don't fret
No, I had him!
His throat was there and he'll never come again

Easy now, hush, love, hush
I keep telling you
When?
What's your rush?
Why did I wait?
You told me to wait!
Now he'll never come again

There's a hole in the world like a great black pit
And it's filled with people who are filled with shit
And the vermin of the world inhabit it
But not for long

They all deserve to die
Tell you why, Mrs. Lovett, tell you why
Because in all of the whole human race
Mrs. Lovett, there are two kinds of men and only two
There's the one staying put in his proper place
And the one with his foot in the other one's face
Look at me, Mrs. Lovett, look at you

No, we all deserve to die
Even you, Mrs. Lovett, even I
Because the lives of the wicked should be made brief
For the rest of us death will be a relief
We all deserve to die
And I'll never see Johanna
No I'll never hug my girl to me
Finished!

Alright! You sir, how about a shave?
Come and visit your good friend, Sweeney
You sir, too sir?
Welcome to the grave
I will have vengeance
I will have salvation

Who, sir? You, sir?
No one's in the chair
Come on, come on!
Sweeney's waiting
I want you bleeders
You, sir! Anybody!
Gentlemen, now don't be shy!
Not one man, no, nor ten men
Nor a hundred can assuage me
I will have you!

And I will get him back, even as he gloats
In the meantime, I'll practice on less honorable throats
And my Lucy lies in ashes
And I'll never see my girl again!
But the work waits!

I'm alive at last!
And I'm full of joy!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Epiphany" in Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp's song from the musical "Sweeney Todd" depict a moment of revelation for the character of Sweeney Todd. The song begins with Sweeney expressing his frustration and anger at losing out on his chance to kill a man who had wronged him. He is distraught and desperate, knowing that he will never have the opportunity to avenge himself again.

Mrs. Lovett, trying to console him, tells him to calm down and assures him that there will be other opportunities. However, Sweeney's despair and anger take over, and he begins to see the world as a dark and corrupt place. He talks about a metaphorical hole filled with people who are deceitful and cruel, suggesting that they all deserve to die. Sweeney believes that the wicked should have their lives cut short, while death would be a relief for the rest of society.

In the second part of the song, Sweeney's anger intensifies, and he declares that he will seek vengeance and salvation. He invites anyone who wants a shave to come to him, indicating that he plans to use his barber skills as a cover for his murderous intentions. He becomes determined to hunt down his nemesis and takes joy in the prospect of killing others while waiting for his chance.

Overall, "Epiphany" explores Sweeney Todd's descent into madness and his twisted desire for revenge. The lyrics reflect his internal struggle, his loss, and his increasingly dark mindset.

I love this part, especially when Todd starts talking to the people in the streets. It shows how many of us close our eyes and ears to things that are evil, simply because we don't want to deal with stuff like that ourselves. This movie really does show a lot about human nature.

Helena+Johnny= perfect acting pair! I love how helena is so georgeous and dark, and Johnny is just a kick-butt actor. The preformance was so powerful but I give credit to Johnny and Helena because it was their first musical.

I get tears in my eyes every time I here this song. Not because it's beautiful, (even though it is a great performance by Johhny). But this is the scene where he goes completely mad because he is accepting that he will never see his daughter or wife again. :'( It's so tragic.
