Singin' In The Rain
His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face
I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
And singin' just singin' in the rain

Why am I smilin' and why do I sing?
Why does December seem sunny as Spring?
Why do I get up each morning to start happy
And get up with joy in my heart?
Why is each new task a trifle to do?
Because I am living a life full of you

I'm singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face

I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
And singin' just singin' in the rain

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, the singer expresses their joy and contentment in life despite the presence of dark clouds and storms above. By singing in the rain, they indicate their ability to find happiness even in difficult times. The rain, often seen as a symbol of sadness or gloom, becomes a source of joy for the singer. They find delight in laughing at the troubles that surround them and embrace a positive outlook. The mention of the sun in their heart signifies their inner happiness and readiness to receive love. The stormy clouds, which represent challenges or obstacles, cannot dampen the singer's spirits as they eagerly await the rain and continue to wear a smile on their face. They are determined to walk down a path filled with positivity and continue to sing in the rain.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on the reasons behind their constant happiness and singing. They wonder why even in December, traditionally a cold and gloomy month, they feel as if it were sunny springtime. They question why every morning they wake up with a sense of joy and enthusiasm in their heart. The answer lies in their deep connection with someone they cherish. The mention of "living a life full of you" suggests that the singer's happiness stems from being in a loving relationship. The person they are with brings light and warmth into their life, making even the simplest tasks enjoyable. Each new day becomes an opportunity to experience the joy of being together.

The chorus repeats the sentiment expressed in the first verse, emphasizing the pleasure and joy the singer feels by simply singing and embracing the rain. The sun in their heart continues to shine brightly, signifying their happiness, and they eagerly welcome the stormy clouds to chase away anyone who might disturb their state of contentment. Their smile remains unwavering, and they confidently walk down the lane, filled with a cheerful melody in their heart. The act of singing in the rain becomes a symbol of resilience, finding joy in adversity, and remaining positive in the face of challenges.

Overall, "Singin' in the Rain" depicts a person who has found true happiness and contentment in life, regardless of the external circumstances. They choose to see the beauty in even the darkest clouds and find joy in singing amidst the rain. Their happiness is rooted in a deep connection with someone special, and their positive outlook allows them to face any storm with a smile on their face. The song serves as a reminder of the power of optimism and the ability to find joy in even the most challenging moments.

Gus Arnheim's orchestra is yet another favorite of mine from the period; his band had a great sound. Most people, I suppose, associate this song with the Gene Kelly film of the same title. It's a great one, for sure, but so, too, in its way, is THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929, the movie in which Cliff Edwards sang "Singin'" and all the MGM stars played themselves. I love all your shots of the ladies of the day sprinting through the rain-soaked streets -- that's my idea of fun!

@VictrolaJazz

Wonderful version! I love the final scene in the 1929 movie where the whole cast is singing this song with the ark in the background!

@Bobchai

My father remembered this being played by Gus Arnheim's Ambassador Hotel Orchestra when he went dancing at the Cocoanut Grove as a teenager in 1930. He always said the Gene Kelly version was a revival of a forgotten tune, which had been by-passed by the swing era.

@barbcard

The best rain images I've seen, esp. the two paintings and that poignant last scene. Yes, there's something magical about rain, particularly when it dances on the roof while you're half-awake under a lovely quilt.
