Now playing with up to 7 members and based out of Los Angeles, the focus has been perfecting live shows and finishing their first record. Mixed by Dave Trumfio (Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Mates Of State) with a reprise track produced by Jimmy Tamborello (DNTL, Postal Service), sweeping string sections and walls of synths, the 7 month undertaking of the band's debut album has completely paid off. Having just finished a slew of shows in the latter months of '08 including a successful residency at Silverlake Lounge and a show at the Beatles Revolution Lounge in Vegas, as well as good blog love from Buzzbands (Kevin Bronson), Feed Your Head, and Plays Well With Others, his Orchestra is thrilled and ready to take on '09.

This was recorded around the time that the big band was just getting started. It ran from about 1935 to 1945. Benny will always be The King of Swing and we are all richer for his music.

When the original 1934 recording by Chick Webb was issued the record showed only Edgar Sampson as the composer. So how could Benny Goodman and Chick Webb claim credit when Benny Goodman recorded the slower, more popular version?

I must say, though this number was an in-house Chick Webb band concoction and I love that band and their treatment, it's always been the Goodman take that I like best among the big band versions. Much as I admire the leader's playing here, I love most trombonist Joe Harris' two spots and the manner in which Krupa backs him, stirring up the excitement.

They played this (version) song on New Year's Eve night last year on my hometown (Greenwood, SC) radio station WCRS 1450AM. Rare occasion of this song being played on the radio today.

They played songs like the Andrew Sisters, even they played the 1943 version of Stormy Weather (straight out of the movie) by Lena Horne. I'm trying to get the old old old Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile smile smile from the 1910s on their.

Jeff grein the only stations I can get around here are classic rock, stations that play the junk that they call country, public radio and talk radio. As far as I'm concerned...nothing good. That's why I don't listen to the radio anymore.

Benny's band lost to Chick's in a contest at the Savoy. Chick was a mentor for Gene Krupa. His band's version of this song has a faster tempo. I prefer Benny's verssion.
