slave
Hot One Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We proudly sell American youth.
You know we annexed the stars.
Subsidizing our home brand of truth.
We co-opt your heart.

We got to keep you busy.
Long day
Long day
Long day for the worker.

Long day
Long day
Long day for the worker.

You've been jerked by the man you just a...

(Chorus)
Slave!
At the Super Stop n Shop.
Slave!
When you're a rent-a-cop.
Slave!
At a shitty restaurant.
You're carving your own grave.

You got the notion don't ya?
You gonna murder your boss.
You gonna summon the vultures.
Hey Satan! What does that cost?

Devil said you goin' door to door with a gideon bible.
Long day
Long day for the worker.

Long day
Long day
Long day, for the worker.

You been jerked by the man you're just a...

Slave!...

(Chorus)
Slave!
At the Super Stop n Shop.
Slave!
When you're a rent-a-cop.
Slave!
At a shitty restaurant.
You're carving your own grave.

Slave!
At the Super Stop n Shop.
Slave!
When you're a rent-a-cop.
Slave!

At a shitty restaurant.
You're carving your own grave.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Slave" by Hot Ones are a critique of American capitalism and its exploitative nature. The song begins by implying that American youth is being sold, and the stars of the American flag have been annexed, indicating a sense of imperialistic entitlement. The idea of subsidizing a "home brand of truth" is also a commentary on the propaganda machine that exists in America, where they co-opt the hearts of Americans to believe a certain narrative. The chorus repeats the word "slave" in different scenarios where people are working menial jobs, such as at a Super Stop n Shop or as a rent-a-cop. The repetition of this word emphasizes the idea that the working class in America is forced into a situation where they are powerless and are merely working to stay afloat.

The second chorus introduces the idea of rebellion and resistance against the system, indicating that workers often feel like murdering their boss and "summoning the vultures." However, the Devil tells them they will instead go door to door with a Gideon Bible, indicating that resistance is futile and that their voices will not be heard. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus, emphasizing once again that workers are easily replaceable and are destined to "carve their own grave" while being a slave to the system.

Overall, "Slave" is a powerful social commentary on the oppressive nature of capitalism and the view of the working class as expendable resources.

Most Black American people today are in some way or another mixed. (Excluding Africans that have recently immigrated from Africa)

EVERYONE is mixed, which is ironic given the pure blood propaganda from back in the day. Another ironic thing is that to keep blood line and race pure, it means that some minor degree of incest must take place which is harmful ๐Ÿ˜‡

So if everyone is mixed, how did it all happen? Things they do not want us to talk about obviously

Lots of things, pain, bondage, servitude, are forgotten and their legacy and impact watered down and forgotten through the generations. Itโ€™s impact does survive in our appearance and in our blood (DNA)
Just take a look at someone and really observe what do you see? We are all mixed, some more than others, some more long ago or recent than others. We are all United in ways we cannot fathom and imagine. Yet we are separated and divided ๐Ÿ˜•

I am vietnamese, born in America but my mother tells me that her side of the family is Chinese. Which flavor of Chinese I donโ€™t know but I suspect Cantonese.

Our impact on each other survives in our appearance, our cuisine, our language, and our culture.
What a fascinating movie, albeit however painful it may seem, but thatโ€™s history altogether.

Please love one another. โค๏ธ

In this context, sleeps with = rape. Call it what it is/was

@PopcornRecap

Unfortunately we canโ€™t as words like that get auto-demonetized. We should have said โ€œtaken advantage ofโ€ though.

@kaleithajohnson8378

@@PopcornRecap I figured as much. But words do matter and we need to make sure we are not rewriting history in a false context. Thanks for understanding what I was getting at

@PopcornRecap

@@kaleithajohnson8378 I completely agree. Iโ€™ll pin your comment for those who do not get it.

No human should ever own another human being . I agree there is no such thing as a good slave owner .

@Indigostarfly

This film is very mild compared to what really truly happened during slavery. I wish Brenda Sykes never left acting, she was so beautiful and talented.

@Simply.Amirahhh
