Oh Bella
Humble Pie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Looking out at rows of slated roofs
Through the flowers on her window sill
Drifting back to days of horses hooves
And there she day dreams, she is there still.

Her walzing pup there used to be
But she says there′s nothing much to do today.
Oh Bella, hard to tell
Once you were a jealous lady love
Give it to every man of solemn standing
He's the one you′re thinking of.

Small brown dog, he's got a purse in his mouth
He's waiting at the crossing for the word to go
She waits too for someone to help her out
′Cause in a world so, so fast she moves so slow.

She gets her pension every week
But she says it′s always here to keep today.

Oh Bella, hard to tell
Once you were a jealous lady love
Give it to every man of solemn standing

He's the one you′re thinking of
He's the one you′re thinking of.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Humble Pie's song "Oh Bella" paints a picture of an elderly woman named Bella who spends most of her days daydreaming about the past. She gazes out of her window over the rows of slated roofs, reminiscing on the days when horses roamed the streets. She drifts into memories of days gone by and still imagines herself back in that time.

The lyrics mention Bella's dog, who used to be a dancing companion but now just waits for her in anticipation. Bella is a pensioner and although she receives her payment every week, she feels it's just there to keep her company as there's nothing much for her to do.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Once you were a jealous lady love" which could allude to Bella being a beautiful, desirable woman who may have once had many suitors. However, now she is older, with a slower pace of life, and her only companion is her small dog.

The song conveys a sense of sadness and loneliness, and perhaps a nostalgia for a more exciting time in Bella's life. It's a poignant reminder that old age is often accompanied by a sense of loss and lack of purpose.
