Don't Tell Your Mother
Husky Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't tell your father we may never return
And kiss your little sister while she sleeps
Don't think I'll tell mine, she'll never let us sneak
I'll tell those fuckers that I work for to go to hell
All the people thought they knew me so very well
Josephine, don't love her anymore
We'll leave our things behind for friends and family
We'll move like gypsies along shores of silent sea
They'll be no reason to be frightened or sad
They'll be no wishing for the things we never had
You'll tell those fuckers that you work for to go to hell
All the people we thought you knew so very well
Josephine, don't love her anymore
Anymore, anymore, anymore, anymore
The lyrics of Husky's song Don't Tell Your Mother convey the essence of eloping, escaping from the societal and familial boundations to be with the one you love. The singer urges their lover not to disclose their plan of leaving to their mother or father because they might not understand it. The lyrics express the excitement and urgency of this decision, as the singer advises their lover to kiss their little sister goodbye while she is sleeping, to avoid being caught. The singer, however, has no intention of telling their own mother, as they know she'll never let them sneak away.
In the next verse, the singer talks about leaving all their things behind for friends and family, implying that they are not planning to return anytime soon. The imagery of moving like gypsies along the shores of the silent sea implies a sense of freedom and adventure. The lyrics also suggest that the decision to leave is mutual as the singer urges their partner to tell their own "f*ckers" at work to go to hell, and there is no sadness or regret in this action.
The lyric "Josephine don't love her anymore" adds more depth to the song. The name Josephine could either refer to a person or a symbol of something else. It is possible that the singer refers to a person named Josephine whom they used to love but do not anymore. Alternatively, Josephine could represent a past life, a burdensome obligation, or a physical place that the singer does not love anymore.
