After salvaging a good but rotting wood bass guitar
When we picked up the bass guitar, it was damaged, but we saw its potential and decided to save it anyway.

On a late night trip to the city dump,
We found the bass guitar in the dump at night.

The man with the dirty disco twelve inch hands
The man who found the bass guitar had dirty, rough hands from playing music.

Got in his light blue van,
He got into his light blue van to travel to the dance.

And heading to the school dance,
He was driving to the school dance to perform with the bass guitar.

He noticed cold water creeping up the cuffs of his pants.
As he drove, the water began to seep into his van and up his pant cuffs.

He swerved to dodge two people
He avoided hitting two people who were planting flowers on the on-ramp.

Planting flowers in the middle of the on-ramp.
The people were unexpectedly gardening in the pathway of the man's van.

And as the water level in the van, it began to rise,
The water continued to rise in the van, causing the man to become worried.

He attributed the water to the bass guitar.
The man thought the water damage was caused by the bass guitar being in the van.

(and that's probably why it was in the trash in the first place).
The bass guitar was probably disposed of due to the water damage.

And as the water got to the bottom of his ribcage,
The water had risen high enough to reach the man's chest.

He thought about his laundry in the back
The man remembered his laundry was in the back of the van.

And the brand new dressed shirt
He was wearing a new shirt he had recently purchased.

And how the water'd sog the start right out of the collar.
He realized the water would ruin the collar of his new shirt.

He probably should have pulled right over to the shoulder
The man should have stopped the van and thrown out the bass guitar to avoid further damage.

But he was late for the dance,
He was running late and didn't want to be tardy for his performance.

And he couldn't reach the bass from where he sat
The bass guitar was too far away for him to grab without stopping the van.

To throw it out the window.
Throwing the bass guitar out the window was not an option.

He was five minutes from where the function was
He was close to the school where the dance was being held.

And he could hold his breath for two or so minutes if he must.
He was determined to make it to the dance and thought he could hold his breath for a short period if needed.

The tall person's feet would stick out of the dirt like a headstone if they were buried.
