Ghost Dream
Hymie's Basement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why?:
After salvaging a good but rotting wood bass guitar
On a late night trip to the city dump,
The man with the dirty disco twelve inch hands
Got in his light blue van,
And heading to the school dance,
He noticed cold water creeping up the cuffs of his pants.
He swerved to dodge two people
Planting flowers in the middle of the on-ramp.
And as the water level in the van, it began to rise,
He attributed the water to the bass guitar.
(and that's probably why it was in the trash in the first place).
And as the water got to the bottom of his ribcage,
He thought about his laundry in the back
And the brand new dressed shirt
And how the water'd sog the start right out of the collar.
He probably should have pulled right over to the shoulder
But he was late for the dance,
And he couldn't reach the bass from where he sat
To throw it out the window.
He was five minutes from where the function was
And he could hold his breath for two or so minutes if he must.

Andrew broder:
Brand new skinny ghost,
Meet your brand new angel monster
Microwave, meet your maker.

"i don't trust tall dudes as far as i can throw 'em--that isn't far...
But if i could, i'd throw 'em head first into the ground like a javelin...
And leave 'em there:

Feet protruding out of the dirt like his headstone...
"here lies tall dude."

Overall Meaning

The song "Ghost Dream" by Hymie's Basement is a complex composition, featuring multiple storylines and vivid imagery. One storyline follows a man who salvages a bass guitar from a trash heap and experiences a surreal journey on his way to a school dance. He notices water creeping up his pants and attributes it to the bass guitar, only to find out that the water is rising inside his van. Despite being late for the dance and unable to reach the bass guitar, he continues on his journey, holding his breath to survive as the water rises to his ribcage. The lyrics convey the man's sense of urgency and desperation, as he tries to keep his new shirt dry and make it to the dance on time.

Another storyline in the song features the lyrics of Andrew Broder, who contrasts the image of a "Brand new skinny ghost" with that of an "angel monster." He also expresses his distrust of tall men, stating that he would like to throw them headfirst into the ground like a javelin and leave them there as a marker. These lyrics add a dark and mysterious undertone to the song, suggesting that there may be more to the man's journey than just a trip to a school dance.

Overall, "Ghost Dream" is a deeply layered song that invites the listener to interpret its meaning in their own way. The vivid imagery and multiple storylines create a sense of mystery and intrigue, while the music itself is haunting and atmospheric, adding to the song's overall sense of otherworldliness.
