We Choose Faces
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
how long have i been in this storm
so overwhelmed by the ocean's shapeless form
waters getting harder to tread
with these waves crashing over my head
if i could just see you
if i had to see you
this darkness would turn into light
and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
and everything will be alright
i know u didn't bring me out here to drown
so why am i ten feet under and upside down
barely surviving has become my purpose
cause i'm so used to living underneath the surface
if i could just see you
everything would be alright
if i could see you
this stormness would turn into light
and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
and now everything is alright
everythings alright
The lyrics to "We Choose Faces" by I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness delve deep into the emotions of the singer as they confront the challenges of life. The opening lines, "You are on your own, on your own," sets the tone for the feeling of being alone in the midst of difficulty. The following lines, "how long have I been in this storm, so overwhelmed by the ocean's shapeless form, waters getting harder to tread, with these waves crashing over my head," provide vivid imagery of struggling through a tempestuous period with no direction or guidance.
Nevertheless, the singer finds hope in the idea of reconnecting with a loved one, as shown in the lyrics "If I could just see you, everything would be alright. If I had to see you, this darkness would turn into light." This connection with the loved one is described as healing, as the singer resolves to "walk on water" and dare to follow their passion, trusting that the loved one will catch them if they fall.
The main theme of the song is about finding hope in the darkest of situations and having someone to lean on during those times of difficulty. The metaphor of the stormy ocean and the struggle to stay afloat forms the backbone of this idea, while the idea of being caught by a loved one provides a sense of comfort and a way out of the struggle.

I miss these guys a lot. The kind of post-punk they did on "Fear is on our side" was like a renewed promise that our younger years would have the soundtrack we craved. Waiting for "Dust" and meeting them again provided some relief. But I don't speak for myself alone: the sound they achieved and/or discovered was something many of us were waiting for. Anyway, I love the sound of these guys. ♥
