INSOMNIA
Imago Mortis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Darkest night finds me cold and awake in my deserted room.]

[Me:]
To sleep
To die... that's all
No more

To sleep
To die
Perchance to dream

I shall no longer close my eyes until it's dawn
To see how lifetime dreams may die when light is gone
No bitter sadness blurs my sight, tears I'll refrain
Now is the winter of my pain: it was all in vain

This night I woke up from some tragic, dazed dream
To which I, forceless, could resist but never win
Poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage
The lights are off, the crowd is gone,
The show now wants to die of age

I shall keep my eyes awake
I shall keep my eyes awake
I shall be strong
Carry on
Keep my eyes awake

I shall no longer close my eyes until it's done
To see how lifetime dreams may die with flesh and bones

Good bye old dreams, good night sunlight, tears I'll refrain
I need no reasons for my pain: it was all insane

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Imago Mortis’s song Insomnia depict the singer’s inability to sleep due to a myriad of existential contemplations, such as the transience of life and dashed dreams. The opening line, “Darkest night finds me cold and awake in my deserted room,” sets the stage for a metaphorical representation of the singer’s mental state. The singer states that sleep and death, both inevitable ends to existence, are interchangeable to him or her. The line “Perchance to dream” is an allusion to Hamlet, who contemplates death in a similar fashion.

The second stanza presents a bleak picture of the singer’s view on life. He or she has given up on dreaming and is resigned to face grim reality with open eyes. The lines “Now is the winter of my pain: it was all in vain,” allude to a speech given by Richard III, where he speaks of his failures and regrets. The third stanza features the singer waking up from a dream that has left him or her feeling defeated. The line “The show now wants to die of age” can be interpreted as a nod to Shakespeare’s famous monologue from As You Like It. The singer states that he or she will be strong and carry on despite the pain.

Overall, Insomnia is a bleak yet powerful song that captures the struggle of trying to find peace in a world full of uncertainties and disappointment.

@ImagoMortis

O único ponto a desejar é a pronúncia no Inglês, que melhorou consideravelmente no último CD. O vozeirão é o mesmo.
