Although known primarily as a singer, May also plays the bodhrán, guitar and tambourine. Described as "a unique vocal talent," May is known for her musical style of rockabilly revival and has also been compared to female jazz musicians such as Billie Holiday.
Born in Dublin, the youngest of five children, she fell in love with rockabilly at the age of nine, though was also exposed to a range of musical styles, from Irish traditional music to Elvis Presley. She now specialises in rockabilly, singing her own material and covers. Her debut album with Blue Harlem was No Turning Back, which was followed by Swing Street, and Talk to Me. Her first solo release was Love Tattoo.
May has shared the stage with Alison Moyet, Dionne Warwick, Bryan Ferry, Anastasia, The Supremes, Sister Sledge, Scissor Sisters, Matt Bianco, Elvis Costello, Jools Holland, Elton John, and Jeff Beck.
Y'hoo

But a big peace of fun I'm only five foot three
All the girls at the front were covering over me
So I waved down and jumped but you still couldn't see
I said you... Y'hoo
You... Y'hoo
You... Y'hoo
So I put on my high heels the high as I could
Four more inches it's always good
But still to low for a men to love me
So I waved down and jumped but you still couldn't see
I said you... Y'hoo
You... Y'hoo
You... Y'hoo
Y'hoo, you are looking for me
So I went to the show to see a bit of you
But you still couldn't see
You looked straight ahead, right over me
So I waved down and jumped but you still couldn't see
I said you... Y'hoo
You... Y'hoo
You... Y'hoo
Y'hoo, you are looking for me
In the song Y'hoo by Imelda May, the singer describes herself as a little girl, tiny in size (only five foot three), but big on fun. She recounts being at a show where all the girls in front of her were taller, so she waived and jumped to be seen but was still overlooked. The chorus consists of her repeatedly singing “Y’hoo, you are looking for me”. The singer then puts on high heels to appear taller but still faces the same issue and is unnoticed by the man she desires. She then goes to a show specifically to see this man, but he still overlooks her despite her efforts to be seen.
