As the year changes from 1997 to 1998, I've been in the music industry for many hard-working years.

And I've been doin' this for mad years, payin' dues.
I've been grinding and hustling for years to get where I am today.

It's ironic how quickly everyone wants to be your friend when you start making money.

Everybody want to play with that brother now.
Everyone wants to associate themselves with you and be part of your success.

Run me down, but when the dough gets low, only a few friends roll, you know.
When you're struggling and have no money, only a few true friends stick around to support you.

And Mama, bless her heart, she used to give me strife,
My mom used to give me a hard time, but I know it was only because she wanted the best for me.

Said "Lynisse, please do something with your life."
My mom encouraged me to do something meaningful with my life.

And how it's gon' play out, I don't have a clue;
I'm not sure what the future holds or how things will turn out.

All I know is this much is true, true.
But what I do know is that the music and passion in my heart is true and real.

And I remember when, I used to feen for calls;
I remember a time when I was desperate for phone calls and attention.

When I hit number one I had to scream out calls.
Once I became successful and at the top, I had to shout out demands and terms.

Used to see my Mama strugglin', worn from work;
I used to see the struggles and exhaustion my mama faced from working hard each day.

Told her when I made it big she never gonna work.
I promised my mother that once I made it big, she would never have to work again.

I used to wish at night that my brothers in the street,
I used to pray for my brothers who were in dangerous situations on the street.

Hustlin', shit, they would live to the light,
I wished they would stop hustling and find a better path in life to live in the light.

And see another day somehow, find another way I vow.
I hoped they would find a new path that would keep them alive and well, and I promised to help them in any way possible.

To all my soldiers I hold you down.
I have loyalty and support for all of my friends and associates.

From standin' in the rain, to the rovers now.
From standing out in the rain struggling to now having nice cars and luxury.

I'm screamin your name, to warn you that the rollers is around.

No matter where you at, represent your hood.
