Berlin, who was Jewish, was one of the few Tin Pan Alley/Broadway songwriters who wrote both lyrics and music for his songs. Although he never learned to read music beyond a rudimentary level, he composed over 3,000 songs. Many of his songs, including "God Bless America", "White Christmas", "Alexander's Ragtime Band", and "There's No Business Like Show Business," left an indelible mark on American music and culture. He produced 17 film scores and 21 Broadway scores, in addition to his individual songs.
Act II: You're Just In Love
Irving Berlin Lyrics

I smell blossoms and the trees are bare
All day long I seem to walk on air
I wonder why, I wonder why
I keep tossing in my sleep at night
And what's more I've lost my appetite
Stars that used to twinkle in the skies
You don't need analyzing
It is not so surprising
That you feel very strange but nice
Your heart goes pitter patter
I know just what's the matter
Because I've been there once or twice
Put your head on my shoulder
You need someone who's older
A rub down with a velvet glove
There is nothing you can take
To relieve that pleasant ache
You're not sick, you're just in love
I hear singing and there's no one there
You don't need analyzing, it is not so surprising
I smell blossoms and the trees are bare
That you feel very strange but nice
All day long I seem to walk on air
Your heart goes pitter patter, I know just what's the matter
I wonder why, I wonder why
Because I've been there once or twice
I keep tossing in my sleep at night
Put your head on my shoulder, you need someone who's older
And what's more I've lost my appetite
A rub down with a velvet glove
Stars that used to twinkle in the skies
There is nothing you can take
Are twinkling in my eyes
To relieve that pleasant ache
I wonder why
You're not sick you're just in love
The lyrics to Irving Berlin's song "You're Just in Love" describe the overwhelming and unexplainable feelings of falling in love. The opening lines paint a surreal picture of the world: the singer hears singing but sees no one, smells blooming flowers even though the trees are bare. They feel weightless and blissful all day, but struggle to sleep at night and have lost their appetite. The chorus reveals the reason behind these strange sensations: the singer is in love. They assure their beloved that there's nothing wrong with them, they just need some comfort from an older, more experienced partner.
The lyrics are simple and straightforward, capturing the intense but irrational emotions of falling in love. The imagery of a world that seems out of sync with reality evokes the disorienting feeling of being consumed by love. The chorus is especially effective, with its repetition of the phrase "You're just in love" conveying the idea that this is a common experience that transcends logic or reason.
