Follow the Fleet: Let's Face the Music and Dance
Irving Berlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There may be trouble ahead
But while there's music and moonlight (moonlight and music) and love and romance
Let's face the music and dance
Before the fiddlers have fled

Before they ask us to pay the bill, and while we still have THE chance
Let's face the music and dance
Soon, we'll be without the moon
Humming a different tune - and then...

There may be teardrops to shed
So (But) while there's music and moonlight (moonlight and music) and love and romance
(Let's face the music and dance, dance)

(Let's face the music - let's HEAR that music)
Let's face the music and dance

Overall Meaning

Irving Berlin's song "Let's Face The Music And Dance" is a timeless classic, known for its sophisticated lyrics and upbeat melody. The song starts with the lyrics "There may be trouble ahead," setting the tone for an impending sense of conflict. However, the song's message is one of seizing the moment and enjoying life before any misfortunes might occur.

The lyrics convey the idea of finding joy in the moment, even amidst potential difficulties. The phrase "moonlight and music and love and romance" conjures up images of pleasure and happiness, while the line "before they ask us to pay the bill" suggests that everything comes at a price. The repeated refrain "let's face the music and dance" encourages the listener to take action and enjoy themselves while they still can.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics speak of the inevitability of change - whether it be the loss of moonlight or the shedding of tears. However, the message remains the same - let's face the music and dance, no matter what the circumstance.

Overall, the song's lyrics encourage the listener to live in the moment, embrace life's pleasures, and not let any potential negative outcomes overshadow our enjoyment of the present.

Can you imagine being in the audience on the set and seeing Fred and Ginger do this dance live? Magical.

@stuartweissman7306

Magical indeed! The music and orchestration were just devine and you cannot use that word to describe today's music, even huge productions.

@axiomist1076

Ooohhh, that ending, when they throw their heads back !!!! At the movie theatre where I first saw them in New York in 1973, the entire audience yelled and applauded at that point.

Ever since I first saw this on tv many years ago, that dramatic exit offstage has just thrilled me to no end ! I still get goosebumps from it

Would love to have been there.

I'll bet you saw it at Theater 80 Saint Marks, just as I did. I saw all the Fred and Ginger movies there,
back in the 70s. It was wonderful; the audience cheered and applauded after their dance routines!
