It Had to Be You
Isham Jones And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do I do, just as you say
Why must I just, give you your way
Why do I sigh, why don't I try to forget

It must have been,
That something lovers call fate
Kept me saying, "I have to wait"
I saw them all,
Just couldn't fall 'til we met

It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around, and finally found
The somebody who
Could make me be true,
And could make me be blue
And even be glad, just to be sad
Thinking of you

Some others I've seen,
Might never be mean
Might never be cross,
Or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
For nobody else, gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I
Love you still

It had to be you, wonderful you
It had to be you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "It Had to Be You," by Isham Jones and His Orchestra, deal with a range of emotions that stem from the power of love. The first verse starts with the singer questioning their choices; they follow the instructions of their beloved without hesitation or resistance. They wonder why they aren't trying to forget their love, especially given the heartache and pain that follow. The reason for such devoted attention must be due to fate, the intervention of the universe that brought them together.

The second verse talks about the importance of finding true love. It reveals that the singer had been looking for a long time for a person who would make them genuinely happy, someone who could bring meaning to their life. They tried seeing other people who might have appeared to be likable but didn't create any sparks or stir any emotions. However, when they met their beloved, all their prior inhibitions washed away, and they fell madly in love. They were happy even in sadness because they could think about their lover and be assured that they were not alone.

All in all, the lyrics of "It Had to Be You" express how finding true love can be a transformative experience, changing everything about one's life, even the way they feel about themselves. The song is a testament to the power of fate and the influence of love on the human psyche.

I'm having a sweet 16 and it's 1920s themed. I'm glad there's other young people who enjoy this type of music. I'd go back and live there if I could<3

Good for you lady!! I've been into this stuff since I was twelve, in 1970, and it sounds better and better as the years go on....early jazz, blues, country, gospel, and pop music from the '20s especially is timeless, wonderful listening!

Gus Kahn's lyrics are beautiful. This just happens to be an instrumental versio, common in those days. Great version of this excellent musical piece.
