Missing
It's Immaterial Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yesterday
Well, I turned the radio dial
To hear the news

Talk on the shop floor
Leisure time and travel
Leads to the subject
Of Alistair and Carol
Last seen on pay day
Outside the nightclub
Laughing and planning
A future in Hollywood

And I know you've gone to ground
In some cheap hotel
The other side of town

News in the papers
Well, it must have the names wrong
The car in the paper
Has the right registration
Fished out of Pickmere
Cold and abandoned
Youthful disillusion
The inspector's opinion

Well, I know you've gone to ground
In some cheap hotel
Until the world turns round
And looks for you

In every corner of every room
You know they're looking for you
Even though you're missing
You're not alone

The radio blares
The roadhouse they're searching
Tracing your footsteps
Well, I pray you'll use the phone
Say anything, come home
Don't break my heart
This time you've gone too far
Don't break my heart
Don't make the world stop
Spinning round and round again

You had to get away
Is all your letter says
Oh, my little runaway
Things have changed
My little runaway
Things have changed
Come home, come home
Please, please

Everybody's missing you
We're all missing you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to It's Immaterial's song "Missing" seem to be about someone who has disappeared and the singer's desperate attempt to find them. The song is imbued with a sense of confusion and worry, with the singer constantly seeking news and updates on the whereabouts of the missing person. The opening lines set the scene for the rest of the song, with the singer turning the radio dial to hear the news, suggesting their need for information and their inability to find it elsewhere.

The middle section of the song describes a conversation the singer overhears about Alistair and Carol, who were last seen on a night out, planning a future in Hollywood. However, the singer knows that the missing person they are searching for is in hiding in a cheap hotel in the other side of town. The lyrics then move onto news in the papers, and although the car in the paper has the same registration as the missing person's, the names don't match up, adding to the singer's confusion.

As the song continues, the singer assures the missing person that they are not alone in their disappearance and that everyone is looking for them. They want them to come home and not break their heart, this time having gone too far. The song ends with a plea for the missing person to return home, with the singer expressing their love and concern for them.

One of the greatest albums ever made

John Smith

Classically, underrated album. Sheer genius.

Ohh I haven’t heard this in ages — have it somewhere! My favorite album by I.M. is Life is Hard and Then You Die, which was my introduction to their music, I think around the year 1999. “Under- appreciated”/“underrated” are terms that too often are lazily used in YT comment sections (to the point that I find it irritating tbh!) BUT....this band truly is, they have always deserved to have higher visibility & should be on the radar of all music lovers.

I live in New Brighton and the opening track really captures what it was like here in the 80's and early 90's when the place was coughing up blood. Thankfully, it's fortunes have turned around and it's a smashing place to be now....

Ian Wilson

A spellbinding album. Absolutely brilliant.

Great, now I have to import a copy from Europe because I can't stop listening to this. I love Life's Hard And Then You Die, I don't know why it took me so long to listen to this.

This is my first listen to this album. I heard their first album shortly after its release and bought the CD. I guess I was just busy with life and never heard this album. It's less catchy than the first and probably wasn't promoted well back in the day.

I like it on first listen. I bet this one grows on you.

trialsanderrors

Brilliant to have this back. Perfect headphone music.

Wow, have loved their first album but had never heard this one. The first song threw me off and I was about to turn it off, but I decided to continue on and I'm glad I did. What a beautiful "missed" album. Will be impossible to find in the US I'm sure, but I'll be keeping my eye out. I'm pretty sure I will be coming back to listen again until then.
