The Long and Winding Road
J. Abalos Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is turning and turning
But I go on
Cause the fire in my heart is burning and burning
Where do we go from here my dear
When we have it all
We been lost along the way
This strange life that we're in
Is crazy and maybe
One day I'll know
The purpose of it all if I leave till I'm 80
Where do we go from here my dear
When we have it all
We been lost along the way
And we've made it home
Too young to settle
For your compromise
Promises are broken
But that's just life
The lyrics of J. Abalos's song The Long And Winding Road speaks about moving forward through life despite the obstacles and challenges that come along the way. Abalos emphasizes the idea that the journey is never easy as the road is long and winding, but the fire in the heart to keep moving forward should never be extinguished. The "we" referred to in the lyrics reminds the listener that they are not alone in their struggles and that others are on the same path.
Furthermore, Abalos questions the purpose of life, wondering where it will lead, and what it means to have it all. The lyrics acknowledge that life can be strange and maybe even crazy at times. These moments of uncertainty can make one contemplate the meaning of it all, but life will eventually lead individuals to where they need to be. The lyrics encourage individuals to not settle for less than they deserve, as the journey is about growth, learning, and understanding. The promises made will not always be kept, but that is a part of life.

Um, no. Stand By Me wasn't recorded until years later when the Rock N Roll album was done.
Jealous Guy started as a completely different song written in India during the Beatles' stay. The Maharishi gave a lecture about a "son of the mother nature." Paul wrote a song called Mother Nature's Son. John wrote a song called Child Of Nature:
"On the road to Rishi Kesh, I was dreaming more or less
And the dream I had was true, Yes the dream I had was true
I'm just a child of nature
I don't need much to set me free
I'm just a child of nature
I'm one of nature's children"
The song was demoed, but not recorded for the white album along with another song Look At Me (which went almost unchanged and recorded for his 1970 album Plastic Ono Band). Child Of Nature was then dusted off for Imagine in 1971, with a completely new set of lyrics. The lyrics were not about one person or event. It was a feeling John had. He felt he was sometimes a very possessive person. He felt possessive of Cynthia, he felt possessive of Yoko. It really is him apologizing for these feelings. It's not one act, but just a bunch of feelings that he had, and he was saying I'm sorry.
Also, these supposed "lost recordings" you speak of, I think you are confusing this with The Lost Weekend. The Lost Weekend didn't last a weekend, or a week, or a couple weeks, but over a year! It spanned from the end of 1973 to the beginning of 1975. During this time John was separated from Yoko and recorded 3 albums: Mind Games, Walls & Bridges, and Rock & Roll (which John Recorded Stand By Me for). It also contained a one day/night jam session that was recorded and is traded as a bootleg known as A Toot And A Snore In '74 (these might be the recordings you are talking about). This was during John's infamous "Lost Weekend", and at one point he was producing Harry Nillson's record Pussy Cats. Paul and Linda happened to show up, and an impromptu jam session happened and someone happened to hit record. John, Paul, and Linda were joined by Stevie Wonder, Harry Nilsson, Jesse Ed Davis, May Pang, Bobby Keys, and producer Ed Freeman. The recording is easy to come by (just look on youtube or google it), but isn't that great. It's just jamming, John having sound problems, and other nonsense (including obvious talk about cocaine). This was actually the last time John and Paul ever played together, sadly.

The sweetest melody. It is simply overwhelming. The only way I can sing this is by putting my whole heart out.
