Having started their days as a Wednesday 13 tribute act, Alan and his band JP13 found it hard to get gigs besides the ones great mate Tadhg Kelleher would get them, but enjoyed making videos... They stayed up until the early hours on countless nights with a digital camera in the hopes of making an amusing video to a Wednesday 13 song to show to the people of the internet world.
They got anxious to write their own material though as they felt that they were steering away from the "roll" in ''rock and roll'' and after about two years wrote the music to the now-classic "End of Time", they all agreed they were on to something. Not content with one song they quickly started to write more music, in a hurried attempt to come up with songs they wrote the charmingly annoying riff to "Gradual Insanity Twist" lyrics followed and later that night "Gradual Insanity Twist" was written.
Before the writing of "End of Time" was finished the short lived "Athlone Music Promotions" group offered JP13 a days recording with Mike O'Dowd at Lakelands Studios, the band jumped at the chance as they were not very good at remembering things and needed the songs to be recorded, seeing as they weren't confident with "End of Time" they decided to spend the day recording "Gradual Insanity Twist."
Due to the overabundance of time and the demented nature of the band and their new found friend Mike the song was a success and an intro for the song was recorded on "The Funmaker"; a keyboard that was in the studio.
The first day of recording went so well that the band returned for two full weekends in the next year, The Funmaker is almost always present and Mike makes appearances singing or playing guitar or keyboard, friend of the band, and Athlone Music Scene King, David Murphy also makes vocal appearances along with Joe Kerrigan another legendary Athlone man.
The first album "spooky ghost sound #5" was released in August 2010. The band settled on the name due to the sound effects use in the song "Number 11" and also because of their famous love of "ghosting" as you can see on the cover, the album had many working titles, such as:
Mullahs in a Shed,
Ploughing in the Sunset,
JP13 presents: The Legend of Mike and The Funmakers,
and
Alan, The Movie: The Original Soundtrack.

"way cheaper?" Not so sure. yeah it's probably cheaper than the gas station jerky, but you aren't buying your beef and seasonings and smoker at the gas station either are you? No. So you have to compare the prices with more logical options like walmart, safeway, kroger... At most of those stores you can get store brand jerky that's quite tasty for $1/oz or less. And even the jack links stuff is 9.99 for 8oz. or 1.25/oz.
Making it yourself, you will usually spend around 5 bucks for the meat per lb. Since beef is ~75% water but you don't want it completely dehydrated so you will only remove about 65% of the weight. This means 3lb of meat makes about 1 lb of jerky. So 15 dollars.
Then you have to factor in the seasonings. The couple cups of marinade made here would cost about $2.50 in the quantities used, but any seasonings you don't already own you have to buy which can make a batch significantly more expensive.
The cost of the heating drying and refrigeration is around 1-2 dollars for this process.
And then you have to figure that your time is usually worth something. So an hour of prep, 4 hours of cooking and half hour of hanging and drying, a roll of paper towels, and a half hour of cleaning up. It's not a huge deal, but it's half a day that you have to be home and aware of what's going on. You can't go to the store or work or take a nap... It's using your time. In 4 hours, I can door dash and generally make 15+/hour profit =$60. And then buy some jerky while I'm already out driving...
So factoring in the cost of meat, seasoning, and energy (assuming you already own all the equipment) you are looking at around $17-20 per lb or about 1-1.25 per oz.... PLUS time which again is around $60 per batch that I could have been making. Which means the true cost of homemade jerky is around $70/lb unless you have a humongous oven.
Also the main reason for buying jerky is convenience. If I'm at home already, I'd rather just eat some good steak.
