Time i got over my fear: 3 years ago
Ive just found this, but here was my story of overcoming my fear of cantering on a specific horse.
A bit of backstory: i always wanted to canter again, but was not comfortable enough to do it without the help of my trainer. So i told her that i wanted to canter again. The horse itself was a green horse (kind off, just in the canter) that had never done a canterunder saddle.
With the trainer and uncomfortable me riding the horse, on the lunge, moved into a canter, the horse wasn't relaxed either, and had a hasty canter.
The first round went ok, the second round went ok, the third however went horribly wrong, she slipped and fell with me to the ground. I almost got under her, but i got lucky and fell 10 cm next to her. With a few bruses and scratches, i got up again, and my trainer made me canter again, with me bing even more uncomfortable and of fear of cantering.
Later when we checked her over after the ride, we found out she missed a chunk of her hoof, but that had been covered by dirt and was also not feel able or see able.
Now that i was scared of cantering on that specific horse, which was my own unfortunately, luckily later.
I went back to walking, trotting and focusing on dressage movements, that are not done in a canter. Slowly but surely i felt comfortable doing a fast trot, which is still impossible for me to sit right.
I got the urge to canter again on that specific horse. So i did it, without a trainer, or anyone in sight. The horse was also not quite comfortable doing it, but had a significant more steady ground and feeling of the ground. So i did it again, and it worked, slowly doing it more and more.
Even to the point of trying it bareback, which she didn't like, as i was the one who did not have enough balance. However even though she bucked me almost off, my balance was good enough for that to stay on in a canter. As in right now, im working on balance in canter, even without sirrups sometimes, as id had lost the whilest cantering

I just started riding a month and a half ago after 30 years. I take lessons once a week and work in the stables once a week. I now am going to start leasing the horse I ride once a week just to practice. I ask questions and work on my basics. I am in no rush and I love feeling confident riding my horse with no pressure. Thank you for this. It was very helpful.

Love it! Its so common for riders to try to not admit their fears or nervousness because we judge ourselves so much and want to prove our worth by "riding the bucks" or the things that scares us most! But there's no reason to not discuss and share it with others! Because many riders experience this and nearly EVERY rider has felt it at some point or another! Thanks for sharing! <3
