Sitting Waiting Wishing
Jack Johnson(잭 존슨) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I was sitting, waiting, wishing
You believed in superstitions
Then maybe you'd see the signs

Lord knows that this world is cruel
And I ain't the Lord no I'm just a fool
And a loving somebody don't make them love you
Must I always be waiting, waiting on you?
Must I always be playing, playing your fool?

I sang your songs, I danced your dance
I gave your friends all a chance
Putting up with them wasn't worth never having you

Aw, maybe you've been through this before
But it's my first time so please ignore
The next few lines 'cause they're directed at you

I can't always be waiting, waiting on you
I can't always be playing, playing your fool

I keep playing your part
But it's not my scene
Want this plot to twist
I've had enough mystery

Keep building it up
But then you're shooting me down
But I'm already down
Just wait a minute

Just sitting, waiting
Just wait a minute
Just sitting, waiting

Well if I was in your position
I'd put down all my ammunition
I'd wonder why it had taken me so long

But Lord knows that I'm not you
And if I was I wouldn't be so cruel
'Cause waiting on love ain't so easy to do

Must I always be waiting, waiting on you?
Must I always be playing, playing your fool?

No I can't always be waiting, waiting on you
I can't always be playing, playing your fool, fool

Overall Meaning

In the song Sitting Waiting Wishing, Jack Johnson is expressing his frustration with waiting for a person he loves to reciprocate his love. He suggests that if this person believed in superstitions they may see the signs and understand the depth of his feelings. However, as the world can be cruel, he acknowledges that being in love with someone does not necessarily guarantee that they will love you back. Johnson questions whether he must always be waiting and playing the fool for this person. He continues to describe how he has done everything he could to be with them, but putting up with their friends was not worth losing them. Johnson asks that the person ignore the next few lines as they are directed at them; indicating that he is frustrated with the lack of reciprocity in their relationship. He then states that he cannot keep waiting for them and playing their fool. The song suggests that he needs to move on and direct his energy elsewhere, as waiting for someone who does not feel the same way is unproductive.

Yeah I only clicked on this song for back ground music. I happened to look at the screen near the end & knew it was a video that would be worth rewatching for the visual aspect alone. I must say it didn't disappoint.

It's a dope song that I only recently came across and is insanely relatable at the moment. Say what you may about YT algorithms, but in cases like this it delivers.

Spend enough time listening & going through YT Related videos & you'll quickly find yourself with a nice, ever growing playlist which essentially acts as your lifes soundtrack.

There's so many artist you likely have never heard of, which may have a whole discography of songs that could be crazy relatable for whatever current struggles you're facing.

I just always found it important to take a moment to appreciate the little things in life. So thats what im doing now. I mean I remember having to run home & hope whatever song you liked would be played on the radio. It's a song you heard 100 times that you've grown to absolutely despise?
Well tough sh*t there was no skip button.

I'll tell you, technogy may grow to be our downfall, but the luxeries it brings really is unparalleled.

@rafaelschus

why???? the quality of the music is okay!

@ussocomfreak

Who are these people who are saying why? Better is better. Reloading this in HQ would give better audio (which is not good) as well as allow us to actually appreciate the fact that this man learned this song backwards in order to make this video; something that's pretty difficult to tell right now.

@davidh4648

No can do. When this video was shot , everyrhing was recorded with a potato

@namco003

They did a 4K upload of Careless Whisper a few years ago. I'm sure they could have a higher quality than 240p
