Steppin' Out
Jackson Joe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now
The mist across the window hides the lines
But nothing hides the color of the lights that shine
Electricity so fine
Look and dry your eyes

We
So tired of all the darkness in our lives
With no more angry words to say
Can come alive
Get into a car and drive
To the other side

Me babe, steppin out
Into the night
Into the light
You babe, steppin out
Into the night
Into the light

We
Are young but getting old before our time
We'll leave the T.V. and the radio behind
Don't you wonder what we'll find
Steppin' out tonight

You
Can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We'll be there in just a while
If you follow me

Me babe, steppin' out
Into the night
Into the light
You babe, steppin' out

Into the night
Into the light

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jackson Joe's song "Steppin' Out" paint a picture of two people ready to escape their mundane lives and experience something new and exciting. The opening lines refer to a misty window, which metaphorically represents the barriers that obscure their view of the world. However, the "colorful lights" shining beyond the mist provide a glimmer of hope - it suggests that there's something worth exploring, something that could light up their world. Then, in a moment of defiance, the singer urges his partner to "look and dry her eyes" - to stop worrying about what's behind them and focus on the promise of what lies ahead.

As the song progresses, we see that the couple is tired of their mundane, dark lives, but they have "no more angry words to say." The singer suggests that they can escape their problems by getting into a car and driving to the other side. This exodus is an act of rebellion, and it promises to take them from darkness to light. They leave behind their TV and radio, and the lyrics hint at the idea that they'll find something new and exciting if they step out into the night.

The song's chorus repeats the idea of "stepping out" into the night and into the light, which symbolizes a willingness to leave the past behind and look towards a brighter future. The final verse describes the couple getting into a taxi and driving towards their destiny. The singer urges his partner to dress in bright colors - to embrace their inner child and let go of their inhibitions. When they reach their destination, they'll finally be able to "step out" into the light.

Overall, "Steppin' Out" is a song about seizing the moment and overcoming one's fears. It's a celebration of the joy of discovery and the power of taking risks.

MANY of us are. Because, we ARE now old before our time. It hurts to think that we can't go back and relive and
re-experience those heady promising days.

I am 62 and have tears in my eyes as I listen to this .... remembering back to a different time, a time of my youth. Everything back then was new and exciting. I had energy enough to light New York at night. Life was fun, going out was an experience, and life was full of promise. I was young, good looking, and ready to face the world. ............. I miss those days ............

I remember clubbing until the club closed and then hanging out by the beach until the sun came up. I was living in Hawaii at the the time.
What I wouldn't give to relive those days.
