He was born in Tidworth, Wiltshire, United Kingdom. His style is a mix of pop, rock and folk. Along with vocals, Blunt plays a wide variety of instruments including the piano, guitar, organ, marimba, and mellotron.

Blunt was educated at Elstree School, Woolhampton, then Harrow School (where he received his nickname 'Blunty'), and finally the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Before the release of his album, Blunt was a commissioned officer in the British Army, rose to the rank of Captain and served as a NATO peacekeeper in Kosovo. He was also on duty for the funeral of the Queen Mother on 9th April, 2002.

He is currently signed to Linda Perry's American label Custard, and became the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade when his first single from Back to Bedlam, "You're Beautiful", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006. The last British artist to do so had been Elton John in 1997 with the song Candle in the Wind.

His second album, All The Lost Souls, was released on 17th September 2007.

His third album, Some Kind of Trouble, was released on 8th November 2010.

Just got back from James Blunt's gig in Manchester and my god this man was born to perform. He ran around the arena at the age of 50 as if he was still a teenager and sang each note as if it was his first time performing on stage. What a pleasure it was to not only witness this iconic song live, but to witness one of the greatest English artist of all time. If you ever see him on tour again, you MUST go people! Trust me you won't regret it :)

It was a Saturday evening, 10th September, 2016. I received a call from my ex giving me reasons why we couldn't be together again. The next day which was a Sunday, I heard this song playing on the radio, and being alone, I found myself being flooded with nostalgia from the great moments we shared together. This song came to symbolise our breakup for a long time and brought me forlorn memories of the past times. This is a story that I haven't shared with very man people because it makes me sad whenever I think about it and it happened quite a long time ago. But here we go. I was 12 or 13 years old and my family and I went to Universal studios in Orlando (I am now 22). We were standing in line to ride The Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster. I was talking to my dad and I glanced away for a split second, and locked eyes with a girl around my age who was there with her family and she was talking to who looked to be her dad too. When our eyes met, we both stopped talking and smiled at each other. She had the most genuine smile I had ever seen. She literally seemed to be glowing and in that moment, it was like every one in the line had disappeared and it was only her and I there. I had never even considered the concept of love at first sight until I saw her. I wanted to know everything about this girl. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen and the way she looked at me was unlike any other girl had every looked at me before. I wanted to hug her, kiss her, run my fingers through her hair. She was the most perfect human being I had every seen. Although our eyes only met for a few seconds, it felt like an eternity. Then, suddenly, her and her family were called by the ride attendants to board the ride. I tried to approach her before she got on, but there were several people between us and before I knew it, she was gone. I looked for her after I got off the ride, but she was no where to be found. I had the biggest pit in my stomach for the rest of the day. I felt like I had just found my one true love and let her slip away. The reason I tell you this story is because when I got home that night, as I laid in my bed listening to the radio, this song came on. I began to cry, thinking about her and how I would never see her again. Now, almost 10 years later, when I hear this song, I still think about her. I've been back to Universal probably a dozen times since then, because I only live about an hour away, and whenever I walk past that spot where I saw her in the line, I get goosebumps. Even to this day, I can close my eyes and vividly see her beautiful face smiling at me. I wonder if she ever thought about me after that day. I'd give anything to just know her name or see her one more time. But I know that will probably never happen. I've shared this story a few times on the internet, in hope that she might come across it and remember me, even though I know what a ridiculous long shot that is. For all I know, she could have forgotten about me the second she got on that ride and that moment that meant so much to me could have meant absolutely nothing to her. It's so strange how such a small interaction that lasted only 4 or 5 seconds has stuck with me throughout my entire life. Why wasn't that memory of her just pushed to the back of my head, never to be thought of again. That's what makes me think we really did have some special type of connection. This song is really nostalgic to me, it almost hurts to listen to. I pretty much grew up without any friends but my dad would always take me to the ice rink to skate. I must've been six or seven at the time but I can vividly remember being at the end of the oval rink listening to this song and thinking to myself that I was going to remember that moment. Twelve or thirteen years later I still remember and sort of brings a tear to my eye.
