Unhappy with this musical direction, Pat instead taped a pair of drum sticks to his hands and picked up a white Pearl Export drum kit for an onslaught of basement punk shows with his second band, The Five Deadly Diseases (each of the five members named after a disease - Chris Syphilis, for example). A few years and an art school education later, Pat was recording for his next band, Les Savy Fav and found himself a good friend in their sound engineer, the indie/punk home-studio recording guru James Murphy.
Raised in the equally sheltered streets of Princeton Junction, New Jersey, James Murphy had garnered himself a reputation as a live and studio engineer ("recording bands on my 4-track for sandwiches") after a lifetime of starring in various bands himself. Subsequent to his first band at the age of 12, The Mystery Meats, the band names flew in over the years - The Extremes, ? ("We were just a question mark for a while, pre-Prince, just the symbol, I mean, not pre-Prince existence, but pre-Prince being the symbol. And pre-!!!"), Pony, Speedking - but James always found time to balance producing, recording, engineering and performing. Humble but foretelling beginnings for someone that, a decade later, is now heralded as a hugely important figure in electronic music; the "disco infiltrator" that's considered largely responsible for fusing dance and punk music. As the leading man and lyricist of his musical project LCD Soundsystem, the quintet has celebrated two Grammy nominations (for their self-titled debut LP LCD Soundsystem and the classic Daft Punk Is Playing At My House) and received fantastic critical acclaim for their second album released earlier this year, Sound of Silver.
Throughout it all, his best mate Pat Mahoney keeps time on drums and keeps his company on tour for LCD Soundsystem, and the two now have the divine opportunity to explore the globe with the band's relentless schedule. But flashing back to the fateful day Pat first came into James' studio, precisely at the point that dissatisfaction with noise bands and indie rock had reached a halting climax for both of them, their introduction to each other and to dance music was an ecstatic one.
Tell Me That I'm Dreaming
James Murphy & Pat Mahoney Lyrics

I pulled into your town, saw two signs:
â??West and Westâ?? Tell me that I'm dreaming
Turned down a â??No-way streetâ?? and saw another sign:
â??Drive in reverseâ?? or something like it
(We talked like men and ate fish at the end of the pier)
Somebody pinch me, am I? (Na na na na na)
(Was I? Did I away the night?)
Nu Shooz, laser breakfast, fast target vehicles
Leather house, dreaming, somebody pinch me! (Ouch!)
â??Can we who man the ship of state deny it is somewhat out of control?â??
â??Can we who man the ship of state deny it is somewhat out of control?â??
â??Can we who man the ship of state deny it is somewhat out of control?â??
â??Can we who man the ship of state deny it is somewhat out of control?â??
â??Can we who man this?â?? â??Can we who man this?â??
â??Can we deny the control?â?? â??Thank you very much. Thank you.â??
Nightwatchman at a bank made some pirates walk the plank
â??Oh, I must be dreaming.â?? Tell me that I'm dreaming
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
â??Can you imagine all that milk?â?? Tell me that I'm dreaming
â??Tag! You're it! No! It's not funny! It's not funny! Yaaaahh! Not!â??
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
(Tell me that I'm dreaming) Out of control
One man liked milk, (out of control) now he owns a million cows
(Tell me that I'm dreaming) Out of control
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
(Out of control, out of control)
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
(Out of control) One man liked milk (Out of control)
Now he owns a million cows (Out of control, out of control)
(Out of control) One man liked milk (Out of control)
Now he owns a million cows (Out of control)
(Out of control, out of control, out of control)
(Out of control, out of control, out of control)
The lyrics to "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming" by James Murphy & Pat Mahoney are surreal and disjointed, capturing the feeling of being lost in a dreamlike state. Starting with a sample of a presidential speech, the lyrics describe the singer's confusion and disorientation as they navigate an unfamiliar town. Signs instruct them to drive and walk in improbable ways, and they can't quite determine if they are awake or asleep. Meanwhile, strange references to Nu Shooz, laser breakfasts, and milk-owning millionaires further contribute to the sense of disconnection from reality.
The repetition of the phrase "Tell me that I'm dreaming" serves as a plea for someone, anyone, to confirm or deny the singer's perception of their surroundings. The use of disjointed phrases and nonsensical references creates a feeling of uncertainty and confusion, which could be interpreted as a commentary on the state of American politics at the time of the song's release in 2002. The reference to a "ship of state" being out of control, which is repeated multiple times, could be seen as a criticism of the Bush administration and its handling of the War on Terror.
Overall, the lyrics to "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming" are a surrealist exploration of disconnection and disorientation. They combine political commentary with dreamlike imagery to create a unique and thought-provoking piece of music.

“Drive in reverse” or something like it
(We talked like men and ate fish at the end of the pier)
The dream takes a clever twist, now presenting a street you can't drive down and a sign telling you to drive in reverse. All this while the singer has a normal, civil conversation and eats by the water's edge.
I tried 2 walk, but how? The rest of U were dancing with pointy shoes on
Somebody pinch me, am I? (Na na na na na)
(Was I? Did I away the night?)

“Can we who man the ship of state deny it is somewhat out of control?”
“Can we who man this?” “Can we deny the control?” “Thank you very much. Thank you.”
Repeating a question about the lack of control in the world, it seems no one is really paying attention or acknowledging the issue.
Nightwatchman at a bank made some pirates walk the plank
“Oh, I must be dreaming.” Tell me that I'm dreaming
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
“Can you imagine all that milk?” Tell me that I'm dreaming
With even more absurd events happening, like a nightwatchman making pirates walk the plank and a man owning a million cows, the singer's disbelief reaches its peak.
“Tag! You're it! No! It's not funny! It's not funny! Yaaaahh! Not!”
One man liked milk, now he owns a million cows
(Tell me that I'm dreaming) Out of control
One man liked milk, (out of control) now he owns a million cows
(Tell me that I'm dreaming) Out of control

(Out of control, out of control, out of control)
The dream becomes a surreal nightmare as the singer is chased and forced to play tag, while the madness of a man owning a million cows intensifies to the point of being out of control.

Remember when this mix was released, very good mix. Different to the minimal sounds that dominated at the time.

Yeah, electronic music in the nillies around 2005-2008 was heavily dominated by Minimal and Electro sounds. I myself loved House music and I even digged some Minimal-Techno, but when Fabric released this mix it instantly blew me away. The tracks on this mix were the building blocks of House music in the 80s. Since that day I still love Funk and Disco music
Sam Angrignon
spot on is this still underground?

This is perfect! Hah! I have an empty case for this mix and seeing this has just confirmed I will have to buy it again!

I can't thank you enough for making it - how did you mange to get Gandalf to sync so well whilst the tempo increases? It's glorious
James Stubbs
Haha glad to help. I think I made 10-20 sec loops, threw them on a timeline and then sped them up or slowed them down depending on the tempo
