Wolves
Jamie's Elsewhere Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh how I've wronged you, my love
It's come to another night
Filled with cold sweats
Lucid dreams in restless sleep
And, woe is me! Woe is me
For I've defanged the only wolves
That were ever on my side
I hear her voice saying
Leave it behind.

I left behind every trace of a coward
And moved towards the dreams
That were born of our fathers
Who told us the world is only
As flat as we've made it out to be
And, when the day breaks
The sun will transform us
Into something more than the lies
That become us
And, there is nothing I need more

Take aside. Tear apart
Conglomerate. Make new.
What is a wolf truly worth
Without its fangs
Who's hunted down by children
With sticks and crooked blades
And turned into a story
And a token for the few
That it slayed before it lost
The only weapons that it knew?

Oh how I've wronged you, my love
It's come to another night

Filled with cold sweats
Lucid dreams in restless sleep

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Wolves" by Jamie's Elsewhere touch upon themes of regret, redemption, and the loss of power. The song opens with the singer confessing that he has "wronged" someone he loves and is now experiencing the consequences of his actions through sleepless nights and haunting dreams. The next lines express a sense of helplessness as the singer realizes that he has "defanged the only wolves" that were once on his side - in other words, he has lost the protection and strength he once had. He hears the voice of his loved one telling him to "leave it behind," and decides to do exactly that.

The second verse offers a glimpse of hope and determination as the singer declares that he has moved away from his former cowardly self and towards his dreams. He speaks of the wise words of his forefathers, who taught him that the world is only as limiting as we make it out to be. He believes that once the day breaks, the sun will transform him and make him into something greater than the lies that define him. In the chorus, he asks what a wolf is truly worth without its fangs - a metaphor for himself and his own power. He describes the wolf being hunted down by children and turned into a token for the few that it defeated before losing its "weapons" - a resemblance to himself losing his own strength.
