Neben seiner Tätigkeit in Film- und Fernsehproduktionen hat sich Liefers auch eine Karriere als Musiker aufgebaut. Seit 2006 ist er mit seiner Band Jan Josef Liefers & Oblivion regelmäßig auf Tournee. Unter dem Titel Soundtrack meiner Kindheit berichtet er in den Auftritten über seine Kindheit in der DDR und stellt Lieder ostdeutscher Bands (beispielsweise Silly, Lift, Puhdys) vor, die ihn geprägt und durch seine Kindheit und Jugend begleitet haben. 2009 veröffentlichte er eine gleichnamige Autobiografie.
2010 wirkte er mit Sasha und Henning Wehland als Feature-Künstler bei dem Titel Endloser Sommer auf dem Stefan-Waggershausen-Album So ist das Spiel mit.
