Born in a garage, but raised on the road, Jane’s Party is a musical band from the Greater Toronto Area. With catchy hooks, bouncy beats, and sweet vocal harmonies, Jane's Party combines the spirit of the old with new-age "pop & roll", drawing comparisons to bands such as The Skydiggers, Joel Plaskett and Wilco.
In 2009, Jane’s Party established themselves as the "Folk-pop darlings of Toronto" with back-to-back performances at the Now Magazine Lounge in co-ordination with the NXNE Festival. With dates such as The Halifax Pop Explosion, Toronto Indie Music Week, The International Pop Overthrow Festival, and feature performances at The Horseshoe and Hugh’s Room, the band has played over 100 shows alone in the past year in support of their full length album The Garage Sessions. The album was inspired by two independent tours of Northwest Ontario and Eastern Canada, winning over the hearts of anyone within earshot. The Garage Sessions captures the groups ability to compose feel good songs,"which are clean, direct and glowing with warmth" (John Sakamoto, The Toronto Star). Recently Jane’s Party has found themselves sharing bills with acts such as Steve Poltz, You Say Party We Say Die, By Divine Right, Zeus and more…
Hideaway
Jane's Party Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've always been afraid to close my eyes and feel,
What I′ll find.
I'm not the man my mother thought I'd be,
I′ve never saved the life of made one up,
But it′s alright,
Cause it hasn't hit me yet
Do you think you should let me know where to hideaway
Do you think you should tell me where to go.
No matter where I go,
I′ll always feel like,
That it ain't worth a dime if I can′t see what's right,
For my eyes.
I never understood how far apart it was,
The space we left behind from here to someplace new,
But I can see it now.
Do you think you should let me know where to hideaway,
Do you think you should tell me where to go.
They didn′t even think to ask my name,
Well I was one of few but it's all the same,
How could I know?
How could I know?
How could I know?
That things would go my way.
In Jane’s Party's song Hideaway, the lead vocalist is expressing his anxiety and fear about stepping out of his comfort zone. He confesses that he's never been the kind of person to venture out into the night, as he's always been afraid of what he might face. The uncertainty of what he might find and the unknown is so overwhelming that he's paralyzed to even close his eyes. He also admits that he's not the person his mother thought he'd be, as he has never saved a life or made any significant changes in the world. However, he's not devastated by it because he hasn't hit that realization yet.
The singer asks for guidance, seeking someone who can tell him where to hide - a place where he can be free of anxiety and fear. He recognizes that no matter where he goes, he will always be haunted by the feeling that something's not worth a dime if he can't see what's right for his eyes. He reflects and indicates that he never realized the inevitable distance between here and a new place. But now he knows that the distance is significant and can see it in his current state, facing new things beyond his comfort zone.
Overall, the song invokes a feeling of unease, uncertainty, and anxiety about the unknown. The singer's fear is palpable, and he seeks solace in someone he trusts, hoping they will show him the path to where he can find refuge, a haven, a place to be himself.
